Hello Everyone

I haven't fallen off of the face of the earth just that life is pretty much the same and I haven't really had anything new to share. Also the weather has been just absolutely beautiful here and us Oregonians have to bask in it while we can. When there is nice weather it is against the law in Oregon to stay inside.

I'm curious about the folks reading this blog and if the mood strikes you I would love you to answer the following questions:

1. What was the happiest day in your life?

2. What accomplishment that you had during life are you the most proud of?

3. What is your favorite TV show?

4. Who is your favorite actor?

5. Who is your favorite actress?

I will give my answers now:

1. When after an eight year recovery I took a step without the aid of a cane, crutch, or leg brace. There is no feeling that I've had that comparest to that.

2. Winning the Helen Keller Award for charity work, for toy drives for the Children's hospital and abused womens' shelters, being on the Estate Planning Committe of a cancer research center specializing in breast cancer, and raising money to buy shoes and socks for poor grade school kids.

3. Tough one but tie between Dancing With The Stars and Top Chef.

4. Also tough. Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Tom Hanks, Al Pacino, and a few others.

5. Dead Audrey Hepburn. Alive Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, Laura Linney.

May the day bring you love and happiness.

Hi Dona

Love your choices. Your son is lucky to have such a caring and proud Mom.

I also like The Amazing Race just not quite as much as the other two. I like to watch how teams work through disagreements among themselves. Bev that posts here once in a while is an Amazing Race fan. I am of of a Rob Petrie than Lucy fan.

I forgot about Edward Norton. His potrayal of a killer in Primal Fear was wrenching. Who is Giovanni Ribisi.

I forgot about Julia Ormand. She is also outstanding.

Hi Symply

Love your choices too. Sandra Bullock is one of my favorites also.

Getting a college degree is always something to be proud of and if you get a second one that will be something to be just as or more proud of.

My sister and her husband are big CSI fans. And 24 fans.

1. Too many to name.

2. Being married to the same great guy for 52+ years and having four wonderful daughters.

3. Northern Exposure, Night Court, The West Wing, WKRP in Cincinnati, MASH (not necessarily in that order). Programs that are on now? Bill Moyers' Journal, NCIS, The Closer.

4. Actors: Tommy Lee Jones, James Earl Jones, Harrison Ford, Denzel Washington, Tom Hanks

5. Actresses: Glenn Close, Jessica Lange, Ingrid Bergman

Being married for 52 years is a huge accomplishment, when is your anniversary?

I loved both WRKP and Night Court and Sister is a huge NCIS fan. We both used to love the show it spinned off from, JAG.

How in the world could I forget Denzel Washington? He is just great.

Ingrid Bergman is another one of my favorites.

My Dad always wanted ONE of us to graduate college. Unfornately, he didn't live to see me walk across that stage. His brother was there and they look so much alike that is was almost like having him there. I did it for him as much as I did it for myself.

William J. said...

My dad wanted to graduate from college too and didn't because he had to take care of his five sisters. He could only do two years. He did live to see both his sons graduate from college.

I do think your dad saw you graduate. I belive very strongly those we love are angels watching over us.

I know he was proud of you.

Okay, here goes...
The day my daughter was born, of course, but just as an aside, I remember one day when I was on the scoring stage with my favorite composer. Everybody was in a good mood, the music was great, and I thought, "At this moment, I'm happy. I must remember to remember moments like this."

Accomplishment. The way my daughter turned out, tho' it may be more her accomplishment than mine. Secondly, that I managed a good work history and was frugal enough that I'm comfy in retirement. So far.

Not sure I have a favorite at the moment. I like "Top Chef" a lot, and surprisingly, since I don't believe in psychics, "Medium". All-time favorite TV, probably "The West Wing".

Antonio Banderas for looks, Anthony Hopkins for talent and versatility, Denzel Washington for talent and taking chances. Lots of others I like and can't think of at the moment.

Actress? Hmmm... not sure. Helen Mirren, Jane Fonda. Streep and Close, of course. Sally Field. The young ones somehow don't stick with me, though some are darned good.

We never watched JAG, and didn't know, at first, that NCIS was a spin-off. I wanted to watch it because I'm a great fan of Mark Harmon. Love the whole cast.

We eloped in December 1955.

William J. said...

Pat

Of course the first question is who was the compuser?

I think you have done a marvelous job with both your daughter and your investments and your mother too.

I've heard really good things about Medium. Maybe I should watch it too. West Wing was always a fun watch with great acting.

I forgot to mention in my favorite TV shows, Friday Night Lights.

I've loved Banderas in Take The Lead. Hopkins I am lukewarm with.

You picked some great Actresses. Mirren and Fonda are in a class by themselves. I should have mentioned Julie Christie as one of my favorites. She was great in Away From Her.

You eloped at a very young age and your marriage still succeeded. Both you and your husband should be commended.

Bill, on Giovanni Ribisi, the first movie that comes to mind is "The Other Sister" with Diane Keaton and Juliette Lewis. Also "That Thing You Do" with Tom Hanks. Mind is a blur after that other than he has been in a lot of tv series like Married with Children or Wonder Years and Friends. I just like him..who am I kidding I just love them all and movies too! And I love Rob Petrie and Mary Tyler Moore too and watch Dick Van Dyke about as much as the Lucy shows. And how could I forget Tommy Lee Jones?

Pat said...

The composer was Bruce Broughton. I've lost track of him now, but he was really good. And very smart and fun to talk with. The score of his you might know is "Silverado". Or maybe "Young Sherlock Holmes". I worked on "Last Rites" with him and a whole bunch of TV shows.

I've heard nothing but good things about "Friday Night Lights", even for a non-football fan like me, but never watched it because of some conflict with something else. I like the lead actor, Kyle Chandler.

Julie Christie is a good choice, too. So many good actors around, it's hard to pick just a few.

William J. said...

Dona

I did a google search of Ribisi and found out he was also in Saving Private Ryan and now I remember who he is.

I don't know if you were here during the OSCAR time you saw that I love movies too!

Here is Bruce Broughton's offical website.

I didn't know you worked on Last Rites. You really have an amazing
background!

Friday Night Lights is so great because of the acting, it is the best on television. My married friends also tell me the married couple is the most authentic married couple on TV.

Thanks for the link, Bill. I never think to look up people's websites. Brought back memories. Besides lots of DALLAS shows, I also worked on BOY WHO COULD FLY, O PIONEERS, and JACKNIFE with Bruce. I think there's more than one movie called LAST RITES. The one I mentioned is the one with Tom Berenger. I think there's more than one JACKNIFE, too. His is the one with DeNiro. I forgot that he did the theme for JAG, which I know you liked (I did, too).

Interesting about the married couple on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS. I must watch that. I think it's why I like MEDIUM. I like the way they do the marriage and the family.

I went to the web site because I was curious as to what kind of music he composed and was really impressed by his background. I hadn't heard of him until you mentioned him.

The Boy Who Could Fly was one of my all time favorite movies and in my humble opinion very underrated. I didn't know that you edited the music for it. You really have had a wonderful background.

What they did with Friday Night Lights because it had low ratings but was loved by the critics is they brought it back in an unusual form. Direct TV and NBC agreed to a contract where Direct TV pays the bills but in return it gets it from October through December. Then in January it returns to NBC.
My guess is you would like it. In fact you might want to watch a couple of the seasons that are out on DVD.

Yes, Bruce is impressive. Too bad he doesn't have LAST RITES music in his "listen" area. I loved that score. Also glad you liked BOY WHO COULD FLY. That was my first real feature. I had done some small ones, mostly freebies for friends, but that was my first "real job" one for the Big Screen.

While you're being impressed, I keep forgetting to tell you that I worked with Harold Wheeler of "Dancing" once. He did one episode of HOMEFRONT and he was nice to work with and did a very good score.

Now that I'm home, let me see if I can answer your questions (you KNOW I love stuff like this)

1. Rather than the obvious (the day each of my children was born), there are so many happy days, 2 weeks ago when our granddaughter was born ranks pretty high. I'd also include the day I landed in Australia.

2. So many of my "proud of" things involve my kids doing stuff, but if things that *I* have done all by myself, I would say writing a book.

3. Like others have said, too many to name, but ones that I have wanted to have copies of include: Northern Exposure, The Avengers, The West Wing, The Dick Van Dyke Show, and, recently a WONDERFUL 3-season show from Canada called "Slings and Arrows" (rent it from Netflix; you won't be disappointed!)

4. I like Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hanks, Morgan Freeman, and of the oldies Cary Grant, Gregory Peck, Spencer Tracy. I also agree with you on Philip Seymour Hoffman.

3. No longer with us: Audrey Hepburn, Katharine Hepburn, Judy Garland (of course). Of those still with us: Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep, Sharon Stone (didn't think about her one way or another until I saw her on "Inside the Actors Studio"--fascinating woman), Angelina Jolie (more for eye candy than for actual acting ability)

Bev Sykes said...

P.S. I also like anything Robin Williams does, whether serious or comedic.

William J. said...

Pat

I tried to find LAST RITES on some music and lyrics web pages and couldn't find it.

If my book gets published and I sell movie rights to it you can be the music editor and Bruce can be the composer!

HOMEFRONT is another one of my all time favorite tv shows. Wasn't Kyle Chandler in that too?

I think Harold Wheeler is a genius. His versitality is amazing.

The people that you have worked with and have met read like an all star lineup!

I'm glad you like this stuff as I really like learning about all of the people that post here so I will be doing more of it in the future.

Congratulations on your new granddaughter!!

Writing a book is a huge accomplishment. That definitely is something to be proud of.

I've never heard of Slings and Arrows before. I will rent it when I get a chance.

You are the second one that mentioned Hopkins. I love Spencer Tracy because several people that met my dad said that he reminded them of Spencer Tracy.

Sharon Stone is an interesting woman in so many ways.

Robin Williams is a very underrated actor. I loved him in Dead Poets' Society.

You're on for your movie. I'm retired, but you couldn't do better than Bruce for your composer, and if I can learn enough of the new bells & whistles, I might come out of retirement for your movie.

Yes, Harold Wheeler is a real talent. I don't know if he got other composing gigs, but if he wants them, he should get them.

Yes, Kyle Chandler was in "Homefront", and very good he was, too.

Here is what I could find out about Wheeler:

Harold Wheeler (born June 14, 1943 in St. Louis, Missouri) is an orchestrator, composer, conductor, arranger, record producer, and music director. He has received numerous Tony Award and Drama Desk Award nominations for orchestration, and won the 2003 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Orchestration for Hairspray.

Wheeler made history when he was named Music Conductor for the 76th Academy Awards, becoming the first African-American conductor in the Academy's history. He also was conductor alongside Marc Shaiman and William Ross at the 79th Academy Awards. Wheeler was one of two conductors (the others being fellow composers John Williams and Paul Shaffer) during the closing ceremonies of the 1996 Summer Olympics.

He is currently the musical director on the ABC Network show, Dancing with the Stars.

He is married to television, Broadway, and movie performer Hattie Winston.

Coming in days after everybody else.

The best day in my life was holding my daughter in my arms, knowing that after all the trauma of the pregnancy, and all those years of wanting a girl, she was going to be okay.

The thing I am proudest of is having almost grown up kids who are truly good people. Not necessarily good students (sigh) but good solid human beings.

And I don't watch TV, or enough movies to have an opinion.

Can't figure out why you waited so long to post your responses, it isn't like you were busy or anything. Seriously, I bet you are happy tax season is over. I hope you are getting some rest now.

I remember you hosting a ton of us at your house right after you had the baby. She was so beautiful and still is I am sure.

If comes down to a choice between good peoople and good students I would take the former any day of the week. Plus some kids, like myself, are just late bloomers. I wasn't a good student until I got to college. Don't give up on their student progress yet!
