Inspiring Heroes & Entertainment News.

We haven't had an inspirational story for a while so here is one:

Now how about an everyday hero?

Ok, enough about feel good stories. Let's go into the information mode. Not heavy duty information but entertainment information. One of the great shows on television when I was in school was the ultimate soap opera, DARK SHADOWS. It came on about three-thirty in the afternoon and I remember rushing home from school so I wouldn't miss it. It was a great series that still has a cult following. I anticipate new fans now once the movie starring Johnny Depp hits the big screen. The following article also has a little more news. Amy Adams has been chosen to play Janis Joplin. The third bit of information in the article is the story of John Edwards may also hit the big screen. You can read the entire article here:

Of course babes in the woods like Dona and Kim probably haven't heard of Janis or Dark Shadows. I have. Have you? Would you attend a movie about John Edwards? I wouldn't, not in this lifetime. I really don't care to see life stories of cheating scumbags. How about a movie about Janis Joplin? I think I might. I'd be interested in learning why she chose to end her life at such a young age. How about Dark Shadows? Were you a fan? You bet I was.

Your comments about anything and everything are always appreciated.

WHO AM I?

Yesterday's answer was Lucy Stone.

I was an early American publisher born in 1738. I was the first woman to hold the position that would have supervised Cliff Claven. I followed the career path of my dad. I was also the first to print a famous declaration with all the names of the people who signed it. My family set up a printing press and printed the first newspaper of a well known Rhode Island city. When my brother went traveling I took over the paper and published it throughout the war going on at the time. When my brother returned a quarrel resulted in me giving up the newspaper and heading to Baltimore to start my famous first and to run a book store. I also published an almanac. When the Continental Congress moved that a Declaration be widely distributed I was one of the first to offer the use of my press. This was in spite of the risks of being associated with what was considered a treasonable document by the British. I continued supervisoring the letters of many for fourteen years when I was removed from my position by Samuel. He acted in an ungentlemanly manner despite general protest from the Baltimore community. Samuel, the doofus, asserted that the position required "more traveling...than a woman could undertake" and appointed a political ally of his to replace me. Over 230 citizens of Baltimore, including more than 200 leading businessmen, presented a petition demanding my reinstatement. It was unsuccessful. Following my dismissal I sold books, stationery, and dry goods. I died in 1816 still beloved by my community. Who Am I?

I never watched DARK SHADOWS, but I do know about it. At that time, I wasn't much into tv and couldn't have watched in the daytime anyway. I'm interested in the movie, though, esp. since it involves Johnny Depp.

Not terribly interested in the Janis Joplin movie, and I wouldn't be in the John Edwards one except that I see Aaron Sorkin is directing (and probably doing some writing as well). I loved his TV stuff, notably the first couple of seasons of WEST WING, and the movie THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT, so I'll see this movie, though maybe only on DVD. I have seen an intervies with the writer of the book, and he seems as sleazy as Edwards to me, so I hope Sorkin can rescue it.

The inspirational stories are, well, inspirational. I'm very happy that the pizza delivery guy will probably get a paramedic job. As to the other story, good for Herzlich, but it does seem to me that such a brave and driven guy should do something better with his life than (ugh!) football. {eg}

Hi Pat

OK. I admit your comment about football made me laugh. He is living a dream though.

Dark Shadows was where Kate Jackson got her start. It had an amazing opening with some enthralling music. I couldn't find the complete opening but here is a little taste of it:

I loved both West Wing & The American President. The writer was sleezy but Sorkin's background may make me change my mind!

Glad I could give you a laugh. I thought Kate Jackson's start was THE ROOKIES that gave me a year's syndication editing job. I guess DARK SHADOWS was before that. The music is very spooky and vampirish. {g}

Yes, give Sorkin a chance. If he can't make it interesting, nobody can.

Great stories, Bill. Like Pat, I'm so pleased to hear the EMT may be able to go to work again in his field. What a shame for a trained professional who helps people to be delivering pizza, although I'm sure the customer and his wife are certainly grateful. Unlike Pat, I'm not sure Herzlich is wasting his time on football. The reality is that more people look up to sports figures, both college and pro, than other "regular" or many professional people. If his sports career makes people aware that determination can beat a lot of what life throws at you, then I say, whatever works.

Familiar with the name "Dark Shadows," but don't recall ever watching it. Since we don't do a lot of movies, not sure which we may see. Janis Joplin might be interesting, as I've the same questions Pat has -- why did such a promising talent end her life so young? A John Edwards movie? I doubt we'll opt for that one, regardless of the reputation of the director.

I'll probably be least in sight the next couple days. We're heading up a hamfest in NC, making it an overnight, as the "early birds" always share a pot luck. Look for me Sunday, maybe.

Hi Pat

I didn't know you were involved in the rookies! That was one of my favorite shows. I do think that The Rookies was Kate Jackson's first prime time role. Dark Shadows was a day time thing.

Hi DR

It broke my heart that an EMT was reduced to delivering Pizza. I am hoping now he gets a job that matches his talents.

I think Pat was kind of joking but I agree with you he can use the popularity of football to bring a lot of awareness to cancer.

Have a great time at the hamfest!! Of course, you will be missed!

Dark Shadows? Janis Joplin? Bill, you sure know how to get me worked up on a subject don't you? Dark Shadows was my favorite show ever back in the day to watch, and I don't think I missed one. And with Johnny Depp playing Barnabas, OMG is all I have to say....I want a front row seat.

Although Elvis is my first favorite entertainer of all time, Janis is a very close tie to first. So I am very interested in this movie. Although it was said that Bette Midler portrayed her in "The Rose", which I thought she did a fine job, I am not sure about Amy Adams, she doesn't look rough enough, but will certainly give it a look see. I can't wait.

Oh lord, won’t you buy me a mercedes benz ?
My friends all drive porsches, I must make amends.
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So lord, won’t you buy me a mercedes benz ?
Bill you got me started now.....:)

Oh and you think I am a BABE? Thanks :)

William J. said...

Hi Dona

You are a babe. And one that I thought was to young to remember either Janis or Dark Shadows. I don't think I missed an episode of Dark Shadows either. And The Rose was one of my favorite movies of all time. The theme song is one of the greatest romantic songs ever!

Excellent point about Amy Adams. Lindsay Lohan might be good typecasting. But from what I understand one reason they picked Amy was that she can sing. Who would you pick? My mind is drawing a blank but one actress is coming to mind and it will surprise the heck out of you. Sandra Bullock. She did a marvelous job of playing a hard woman in Infamous when she played Harper Lee,

Thank you for the fun posts!!

Bill

PS

Two other things we are alike on Janis & Dark Shadows!
