Columbus Day

Today is a Columbus Day, a holiday. I wouldn't even had known had I not read the paper this morning. No banking, no mail delivery, and all government offices closed. What do you know about Columbus? What is fact and what is fiction?

Since some of you travel on holidays would you like to know what the security check-ins are going to be like in the future? Here goes:

Maybe you didn't know it was a holiday because you are unemployed and every day is the same. You are hoping a job comes up soon. You have had several good prospects after some good job interviews but at the last minute the job goes to someone else. Do you know what may be one of the reasons?

Quote.

"If men can run the world, why can't they stop wearing neckties?" was authored by an American journalist who is most known for several jobs at NBC News, including Washington, DC correspondent, host of the Nickelodeon network's Nick News, and reporter and co-anchor of NBC News Overnight, which was recognized by the jurors of the duPont Columbia Awards as "possibly the best written and most intelligent news program ever." Born in 1944 in her own words here is her life; "I moved around some, married some, had two babies, worked for three radio stations, one of which hired me to read the news because I sounded black - my Texas heritage - and the black woman it had hired did not.... In radio, I learned about keeping logs, editing audiotape, writing copy, selling air time, announcing, and "running a board," which sounds one hell of a lot more sporting than it is." Have you ever heard of Lucky Duck Productions? If you have you can tell me who authored today's quote.

The writer, while he has some interesting stuff about Columbus, left out that he enslaved the native population and he and his men were incredibly cruel. In something like 50 years, I just heard this morning, the native population was completely gone, a lot from suicide to avoid enslavement. Not a nice guy, this guy we celebrate.

The new scanner deal sounds quite impressive. I'd like to know what they are scanning WITH, though. More X-rays?

It has always been easier to get a job if you have a job, or so I seem to recall. But in this economic climate, it does seem terribly unfair to eliminate those who've been out of work for six months or more.

Hi Pat

Columbus was an evil man and didn't even dreally discover America. I deserve a holiday as much as he does. So of course I agree with you.

The new scanner is impressive but I also wonder how much radiation the are sending out into the world.

I always remember that blanks in a resume were always dangerous to have so everyone just lied and filled in the blanks and changed some of the dates. I think also they could make us something they could put on their resume besides unemployment. Stay at home Mom. Consultant. Etc. The would want to stay honest but the could include what they were doing during that time, even volunteer work.

Didn't take time to read about Columbus, but was aware of much of what you and Pat commented on. Not a nice man at all.

I like the concept of the scanner, less personal touching, quicker security, but I'd like to know more about it. Will it change any of the restrictions?

Yes, the old adage about finding a job while you still have one is certainly true. And, yes, there are companies who automatically disqualify applicants who've been unemployed for over a certain period of time, even though most don't say that. Given the current economy and job situation, I suspect we have a whole lot of folks who can't get past the six-month qualifying mark. Yes, it's discrimination and I hope it can be reversed, but a company can find a whole lot of other reasons to use, disguising the real reason. Sigh.

Hi DR

The article debunked several myths about Columbus including he wasn't the one that discovered the world was round. That was done a hundred years earlier by Greek Sciencetist (sp) with their calculations.

Good questions about whether or not the scanner will change any restrictions, I am guessing not. It is just a process of how quickly they can determine if you violated those restrictions.

If I were in charge I would reward employers who took a chance on the long unemployed. Maybe with tax credits. Sometimes people have to be rewarded to do what is right.
