Nike, Sherwood's Big Story, & It Wasn't Me

This coming Monday I've been invited by a friend to the Nike Shareholder's meeting. My friend thinks Michael Phelps might be there but I have my doubts. The last time I went to a Nike Shareholder meeting it was at The Oregonian Convention Center in downtown Portland and Jimmy Connors was there. You didn't really get close to Jimmy, you just heard him speak. This year the shareholder meeting is at the Nike Campus in Beaverton. I've never been there so am looking forward to that. If Michael Phelps is there chances are we won't get to meet him, just hear him speak. Still it should be a fun morning!

The big story in Sherwood, Oregon today is the number of coyote sightings. Just recently a high school student was followed home from school by two coyotes. The Sherwood Police chief has given the city police officers orders to shoot the coyotes on sight. The officers will use high powered rifles that they carry in the police cruisters. I'm not sure how I feel about this except I don't own a gun and never will, I believe hunting will be a sport when the animals are armed and can shoot back. I'm also worried about the safey of the citizens since high power rifles can fire quite a distance and if the police miss their intended target it could hit someone a mile or more away. The policy also drew immediate criticism from Bob Sallinger, conservation director for the the Audubon Society of Portland who called the policy "draconian" and "over the top. The Audubon Society of Portland also so says most contacts with coyotes present a minimal risk to people. Sallinger later goes on to say "Even if you kill some coyotes, they will fill back in very quickly and ultimately, it may make the situation worse." I have yet to see a coyote but now I am going to be on the lookout for them on my morning walks!

In today's Oregonian in The Edge Column was the following:

"A guy walks into the a bar, sees a beautiful woman sitting alone, so he takes the seat next to her. A minute goes by, then he turns to her and says "huge penquins." The woman turns to him, "Pardon me?". The guy looks at her and says, "I'm just trying to break the ice."

Now I want you all to know I wasn't being quoted.

A couple of other things from The Edge Column:

What is blue and white and if it fell out of a tree and hit you it would kill you?" A fridge in a Wrangler jacket.

Where did Noah keep his bees? In the ark hives.

Enough lame jokes for the day. May this be a great day for you!!

I agree with you about the coyotes. I sure wouldn't want to be anywhere around anyone firing a high-powered rifle! I agree with you about sport hunting, too. But you probably knew that.

I like "huge penguins". Very cute.

Hi Pat

It doesn't surprise me that you agree with me about hunting.

Hope things are well with you.

The Nike meeting sounds like fun. Even if you don't get to meet Phelps, how neat to hear him speak.

Interesting story about the coyotes. I wouldn't have expected them in an urban area, unless there's been a lot of recent building, driving them out of their natural habitats. Don't understand the high powered rifles. Makes more sense to use high-powered stun guns. Less potential of innocents being involved in any way and the animals can be relocated.

While I agree with you on the sport hunting, I've been raised around guns all my life. Daddy never hunted, but did have a gun on the farm to protect livestock. We never had a coyote problem, but my uncle did have to shot coyotes one year, because they were going after his cattle and chickens and there were a whole lot of them in his area. In most areas I've lived -- midwest, AK and here, hunting is done for subsistence, not sport. You shoot only what your family needs to get through the winter or the year.

Himself is a gun collector, his father restored guns. However, his "torphies" are from skeet and trap and target shooting, skills of eye/hand coordination. The only thing he's killed since we've been married is the copperhead snake that was coiled to strike Spooker, right beside the house.

You may recall, we had two coyotes who were haunting the fence along our property for a number of days several months ago. Normally, we wouldn't have been concerned, but they didn't "run" when Spook barked at them, or when I went out into the yard, which is a normal coyote reaction -- they don't like people or noise much. The fear was whether they were rabid. If so, or if they've been driven from habitat (and we've had a lot of building around us), they'll jump a fence and chow down on small dogs, like Skeeter and our neighbor's two mini-schnauzers. The third day, Himself shot over their heads, into the woods, and they did turn tail and haven't been back (knocking wood). Since they're not good eating, he had no desire to kill them, just drive them elsewhere, which seems to have been successful.

Having been raised around subsistence hunting and folks who enjoy trap and skeet and target shooting, I have no more understanding of "sport" hunting than you do, I'm afraid. I do understand hunting to feed your family, but I don't understand killing a beautiful animal just for the fun of it or the "trophy" status.

Hi Dr

I view guns, hunting, and religion all the same. I have my opinion and everyone else is titled to theirs and they don't have to believe my way, they can believe theirs as long as they let me believe mine.

There has been a ton of building going on in Sherwood. A ton. I never even thought of stun guns but that would be a great option.

My brother is a hunter and owns a ton of guns. He was a hunting and fishing guide in Wyoming for a while.

I would actually love to see Himself's gun collection. I am scared stiff of snakes, any near me Himself can shot them.

The thing that would scare me about Spooker and the coyotes is that the coyotes might see Spooker as dinner.

Shooting over their head was a perfect solution. I am glad Himself scared them off. I hope they don't return.

I agree with you, I think we all have our own feelings and reactions to issues and I'd never try to "push" mine onto anotherm even though I don't understand or agree with them.

If you've had a lot of building, I suspect the coyotes have been booted out and are looking for both habitat and food. I think we don't realize the tremendous "progress"has on natural habitat.

Stun guns make a lot more sense. They were used in AK when we had problems with bears wandering into urban areas in search of food. I consider them much more humane and logical.

I think you'd enjoy not only seeing Himself's collection but hearing the history. Some of the rifles and shotguns go back to the "wild west" and some of the pistols are form WWII, including a german armament his dad brought back from the war.

Yes, the scare with the coyotes was what/who they might view as lunch. I think Spook is large enough to give them pause, but Skeeter -- nice as an appetizer.

While I'm not big on shooting critters, I had no problem with the killing of the snake, particularly as I'd uncovered one when raking leaves a couple months earlier and what saved me was that it was still cold and he/she was moving slowly. We were warned about snake when we bought this place, but this is the first year (we've been here since 2000) that we've uncovered three of them.

You'll have a great day Monday. First the meeting and to hear Phelps speak and your comedy class Monday nite! Oh boy!

I'm with you guys on the hunting thing. One could call hunting almost anything but a sport. A sport should have a challenge to it. I'm missing the challenge when it comes to hunting.

There is an area just up the road from me, a well established residential area that had problems with coyotes last summer. The home owners association and police department set traps and were able to catch and relocate a number of them. That, and residents keeping their smaller pets indoors, the problem eventually went away.

Bill... consider getting a pepper spray capsule. They make them small enough to carry on a key ring. It may only have enough for warding off one attack... but hopefully during one walk, that's all you'd need. They have quite a range, too.

Been a busy week for me. Had a friend pop over unexpectedly Wednesday nite. We had a great visit.. and at least I was still dressed and presentable LOL. Tomorrow I'm having some professional photos taken. I haven't done that in about 10 years. I'm doing that as I'm not liking any of the photos I've tried to take of me.. I'm always too serious looking. So, I'm suppose to take 3 outfits for 3 different looks. I have NO idea what to wear!!! HELP! lol

Everyone have a great weekend!

Hi Dr

That is why we all got along on S16
nobody pushed their views on anyone and when there were disagreements they were respectful.

Oregon is a strong natural habiatat state but we still have to much building going on despite the strong land use laws that we have.

I know I would enjoy hearing the history. The German armament would really interest me.

Your snake snightings are making me wonder about the line dance visit.

Hi Kaye

Good to see you post here as I've been kind of worried about not seeing you on for a while.

I'm hoping Phelps is going to be there but I just have a feeling he won't be. Phil Knight should be there though and he is an interesting dude.

Sherwood decided against trapping the coyotes because the last time they had a coyote problem in 2000 they set traps and a young child got got in one and was seriously injured. Residents have been repeatedly warned to keep their small pets indoors but there are always those few that don't get the memos.

OK, stupid question but where does one get a pepper spray capsule?

I'm glad you and a friend were able to get together and even happier that you had a great visit.

Don't worry what to wear you will look great in whatever you choose, you are a very nice looking lady.
Let us know how the photo shoot goes. Maybe when I get to my goal weight I will do a professional shoot too.

Hi Simply

Nice to see you here hope the job search is going well, I was actually proud of you for quitting the job you didn't like!

Lady DR said...

Oooh, Kaye, a photo op. What's the occasion, if I may ask?

As to what to wear... I'd say pick out your three favorite outfits, the ones that make you feel good, whether professionally or ready for a good time or "just you" as the perky lady you seem to be. If you're in your "feel good" clothes, you'll probably be more relaxed and look less serious.

Bill, don't lose any sleep over the snake sightings. As I said, they're the first in eight years and the suspicion is a combination of building and the drought. IT's considered an aberration. 'Sides, we're going to house you in the RV, which is way above ground and on asphalt (grin).

Simply, I missed the bit about you quitting your job, but I'm with Bill. Proud of you for leaving a job that was making you unhappy or with which you weren't comfortable. I'll send good thoughts and positive vibes your direction for a short job search and a position you can enjoy.

Hi DR

You didn't miss anything with Symply I will read the blogs of the regular posters here and I read off of Symply's blog that she quit her job, off of Mary Z's blog that she is traveling and off of Dona's blog that her dad is going on a golf excursion!

I've seen a picture of Kaye and anything she wears she will look great in!

DR, anytime anyone mentions snakes I lose sleep over them!

Bill... I'll have to research where to get the pepper spray thingie. Mine was given to me by my sister... but I'll find out where you can pick one up.

DR... the photo op was fun, and thanks for the "perky" (smiles). The photographer was great and the reason? It's been about 10 years since I've had photos taken, and.... I only have one half-decent photo of just my head to put on my Match.com profile. Since the emails are few, ok.. VERY few and far between, (ok... I've had one email in 2 months) I thought I'd see what some nice photos would do. So I kinda killed two birds with one stone. And.. I spent 2 hours trying to decide which 3 outfits to take! I think the ones where I'm wearing red were the best... I do like red! Anyway... can't wait to get them. I guess I should put one on this profile, huh?

Everyone have a great Sunday!

Hi Kaye

Thanks for looking for where I can get pepper spray. I think where I walk is pretty safe but from now on will carry a stick cane that dad used to use to ward off bad dogs when he walked.

One email? Are men on match.com in Austin that freaking stupid?

I didn't have much success on match.com in Portland either until I put in a thousand mile radious and then I go a lot of interest from LA but very few from Portland.

I would love to see a picture on your profile!
