How many ways am I impressed by the boy? A take charge kind of guy at a very young age and despite health problems himself. A little cheer for the Mom for trusting that the boy knew better than her and getting out of the way. What do you think of the boy's actions? What do you think of the Mother's actions, good parenting?

There are a lot of parts to this story, some good, some bad. I admire the parents for making their daughter accountable for her actions. I do have two questions. Did the punishment fit the crime or was it to harsh? Was it dangerous to put a picture of a beautiful teen in the ad? There are so many predators out there, was that good judgment? What is your take on the article?

What would you do if you were sitting in a restaurant, eating a leisurely dinner, reading the newspaper or a book and the building started to move. Personally, I think I would get the hell out of there. You?

I am another one Bill hasn't heard of. I was born in 1912 and died in 2003. During my life I was an American lawyer and judge before being elected to the United States House of Representatives. I attended public schools and went on to graduate with a B.A. and then graduated from law school. I married a lawyer who was also chairman of our state's Democratic Party. I worked as a lawyer in private practice then in the legal department of the American Automobile Insurance Co. I served in the Michigan House of Representatives, serving from 1949 to 1953, after which I was elected to the U.S. House of Representative where I was re-elected nine times. During my time in Congress I sponsored the Equal Rights Amendment. The 9 y/o did great! Interesting, though, that he blew "two breaths" of artificial respiration before beginning the chest compressions. Aren't they saying now that chest compressions alone are the best way to do it? Whatever, good for mom for letting him take over and big kudos to him.
The article about the curfew-breaker didn't say how late she was or what she was doing. I would never publicly humiliate my kid, nor would I hire someone who was being punished to sit my kid. I think there are better ways, even though they say they vetted the "customers" thoroughly.
If I were sitting in a restaurant, or anywhere else and it started to move, I wouldn't think sinkhole, I'd think earthquake, so I'd probably get under a sturdy table, so if the place sank, I'd sink with it.

I thought the same as you, that chest compressions alone are the best but it did say in the article that the young kid recently completed a CPR class. I wonder if they teach younger children differently than adults because they really wouldn't be as strong as compressions as adults.
You hit the nail on the with the problem I had with the parents and the babysitters. I like the idea of making her do babysitting or community service as punishment but I separate from them when the put her picture in the ad because that is just humiliation and I would never do that to anyone let alone a teen that most likely is dealing with self-image problems.
Even if I thought it was an earthquake I'd run like hell to get out of there.

General wisdom I hear is that you're safer staying indoors in an earthquake unless you're sure there's nothing outside that can fall on you, in particular high-tension wires.
As to the CPR, I'd like to know which is best, too.
Great stories, as usual, Bill. I'm really impressed with the big brother and his knowledge. I'd not heard that chest compressions were the only thing needed. I'd always heard that you need to get air into the lungs or passageway, then compress the chest to force out the air and any obstruction with it. Thank goodness, Mom was willing to let him take over.
As to the gal and the babysitting... I think the punishment (free babysitting) fits the crime, but with Pat and you on putting the picture in the paper. I don't think I'd have any hesitation hiring her, if I knew what her "crime" was. In today's world, the picture could be an invitation to the "bad guys," despite her parents screening the calls. Pity they couldn't find a community project for her to do. I wonder what's up with that?
Scary about the Sonic sinking into the sinkhole. None of our Sonics have indoor eating areas, it's all patio style dining. Not sure what I'd do. From where I sit, it's hard to believe anyplace in the SE has had enough rain to create a problem.

I will see if I can find out about the CPR and what is going on now. I also think I will look for a class to take.
As to the building I know everything says it is safer in the building but if I am going to die, it is going to be in fresh air. Plus as long as I am faster than the building I will be in good shape.

For a nine year old the young dude was pretty clear thinking. About six months ago they came out with new guidelines for CPR, I think it was the Red Cross, and they discouraged breathing into the lungs.
I'd hire in the heartbeat. She was an A student and otherwise responsbile. I'm fine with the babysitting but I probably would have had her work with the elderly or in an assisted living center.
I had to laugh about your comment about there not being enough rain for a sinkhole. We haven't had that much rain the last two months either. Don't tell anyone they will want to move here.
