Tunnels, Trunks, & Heartless Thieves.

Sorry I am a little late today. I've been fighting the start of a cold. I kind of kick backed and relaxed this morning. I'm doing all the things to keep whatever I'm feeling from turning into a full fledged cold. Rest, aspirin, lots of liquids, and a good dose of self-pity. After I share articles from all over the world it is back to the recliner.

First up is in Singapore. The men's water polo team has caused a national controversy by their briefs:

http://www.metro.co.uk/sport/oddballs/848499-singapore-water-polo-team-criticised-for-inappropriate-swimming-trunks

Are the trunks inappropriate?

Next we head to the great city of San Diego, California and what they discovered there. Not one tunnel but two:

Let's move on from San Diego to about three thousand miles Northeast of there where the story of a heartless thief will make you so angry you want to kick something. Then the story will make you happy that good people took over to replace the funds so the boy can be normal.

Hope this is a great day for you. Your comments are appreciated.

Bill, do take care of yourself, as you say you're doing. Hopefully, others can take over the caregiving duties until you're back to the front burner.

Yes, the trunks are inappropriate.

I was a bit surprised at the tunnels, until I thought about it. THe cartels are very clever and have a lot of manpower, unfortunately. Given the credentials these folks can "fake," how is a warehouse owner to know if a renter is digging tunnels to wherever?

On a different subject, I was disturbed to receive an e-mail from another Portland friend, outlining the attempted terrorist bombing at the Portland tree lighting ceremony. This comes too close to home. Deb said her husband and son were planning to go, but something intervened. Meanwhile, her 18 yr old son thought the name sounded familiar, then saw the picture. He went back to his 7th grade yearbook or some such and realized he'd spent the 7th grade in classes with the would-be bomber. Way too close to home!

I'm not one to get my knickers twisted because of "disrespect" to the flag, but I also think it's a little silly to wear shirts, ties, etc., with the Stars & Stripes. So I guess I'll venture no opinion on the Singapore team's trunks.

Yeah, those were some tunnels they found, weren't they? They had a lot of amenities, unlike the one I just saw depicted in EL NORTE, where two kids trying to get into the US crawl through a sewer pipe on their hands & knees. Those drug guys get all the good tunnels!

And yes, you correctly predicted my reaction to the last story.

Agree with DR that the would-be Portland bomber is too close to home. From what I've heard, he was being encouraged by... FBI? They were giving him phony components to make his bomb.

I thought the swim suits were hysterical! As to inappropriate, have you seen the commercials for Shake Weight? http://www.weightloss-hq.biz/fitness-equipment/shake-weight-for-men-review.html
Now that's really suggestive - not even suggestive, more like flagrant.

Hi DR

I kind of wavered between Mary Z's take that the trunks were humorous to yours and Pat's take that the trunks were inappropriate.

I wasn't surprised so much that there were tunnels I was surprised at how well they were built.

I will report more on the Portland plot tomorrow with a couple of articles from the Oregonian. It really was kind of a non-story to me. I am more worred about what is going on in Korea than what almost happened in Portland. Nobody here was ever in danger. The FBI intercepted a communication from the teen to Pakistan several months ago and then they basically set him up. They provided him with a fake bomb and were with him when he tried to set it off. The teen should never leave jail. Put while the idea of the threat was disturbing the truth is nobody was ever in danger. In Korea the whole world is in danger.

Hi Pat

I'm with you, I think it is both silly and stupid to wear flags on clothes unless you are military personnel.

Those tunnels were amazing. The where they were put together were more amzing to me than the fact that they existed.
And yes, you correctly predicted my reaction to the last story.

See my comments to DR re the Portland Plot. One thing that came out is when they talked to a terrorist expert on TV said groups weren't really the perps in all the terrorist plots since 9-11. It was individuals that sought out the groups that were the real dangers. The teen here wanted to be a terrorist and cause a Jihad since he was 13, he sought out the group in Pakistan, not the group seeking out him.

Hi Mary Z

Judging from the comments at the bottom of the article a lot of the people would agree that the Singapore uniforms were humorous.

I checked out the web site and didn't even think they were inappropriate, I just wanted to be them.

Hello Bill,
I didn't realise the fallout over the water polo team's swim trunks got as far as the US. Over here, whether anyone was offended really depended on how much of a sense of humour they have. I personally think it was hilarious.

I hope you've had a happy thanksgiving, and that your cold is getting better.

I haven't dropped by your blog much lately as my husband had a bit of a health scare end Oct into early Nov. He wasn't feeling very well, was a bit breathless and I noticed his ankles were swollen. I took him to the ER because I was so afraid it was congestive heart failure.

It wasn't. But they warded him overnight and treated him for an infection. The next day, he was worse. He fainted and they rushed him into ICU. It was there that they discovered an internal bleed. He stayed sedated and intubated in ICU for 5 days. It took 2 days to stop the bleeding.

He's been home 2 weeks now and is recovering, and things are slowly getting back to normal.

All those hours waiting in hospital corridors with my mum when it was my dad inside, now it was my turn waiting with my husband inside. The worse part really was when an attending doctor asked me if my husband had a living will. Anyway, I'm glad to put all that behind me now that he is home.

Hi Snug!

It is so good to hear from you.

Singapore has been in the news a lot lately. Top Chef's final was there. Last night The Amazing Race went through there on the way to Hong Kong. Then the swimming trunks!

I wondered what people in Singapore thought of the trunks now we have the inside scoop.

My cold is gone and my Thanksgiving was great. Do they celebrate Thanksgiving in Singapore? If so I hope yours was great.

I'm very sorry to hear about your husband. Wow have you had your hands full the last few years. First with your parents and now with your husband.

Did they find out what caused the internal bleeding?

I'm glad he is home now and of course you have my positive vibes and good thoughts that he heals completely.

That is the first question they ask in the emergency rooms here, even if it is a non-life threatening reason you are they, do you have a living will. It drives me nuts.

Thanks for checking in.

Hello Bill,
Checking in again today because of all the news out of Portland. First the bomb plot, then the mosque fire (a whole page devoted to both in the local English daily broadsheet) and now the crash of a small "homemade" plane. "Homemade"? You can make planes like you make bread? :) I'm glad for the little thing in the story, that the pilot's dog survived. I hope someone gives him a good home. Poor thing must have been scared out of its wits.

Les' internal bleeding was primarily cause by gastroentritis. That surprised us because he'd never complained of gastric pains before. But a secondary problem also surfaced, there is some cirrhosis of the liver, which exacerbated the bleeding. That's why it took so long to stop it. After the bleeding stopped and everything stablised, the surgical team gave him a CT scan to double check that internally, all was well.

That was when they picked up a mass in the kidney. We had an ultrasound done on that yesterday. It is a class 3 cyst. "Suspicious", said the doctor.

But he is not inclined to recommend surgery, which is the usual option because of the risk of the liver and another internal bleed.

Thanksgiving is not a holiday here. But I did have much to be thankful for. Friends that saw me through the whole ordeal. And more importantly, if it wasn't for the scan, we wouldn't have known about the kidney cyst.

It's like the story of the plane crash which the dog survived. Lots of horrific things you can do without. But a little good thing too, that gives you a little hope.

Hi Snug

I like it whenever you check in!

A homemade plane is really not a true description. What they are, are kits. They order kits with all the plan parts and then put them together. It almost the same as putting model airplanes together just on a bigger scale. The dog no doubt will find a home as several people will be in line to adopt him or her. They said the dog smelled like oil but other than that was in great condition.

The bombing is all over the news here. He pleaded not guilty yesterday and his attorneys are going as I predicted the entrapment route. The trial is set for next February.

Cirrhosis of the liver can be frightening. I am glad everything is well and that they didn't rush into surgery with him. Now I wish him well and that the mass in the kidney is just a cyst and fixable.

We all have so much to be thankful for. And how I admire you for finding the good amongst the bad.

Bill
