Up For Grabs

The answer to yesterday's Who Am I was Agatha Christie

Need money? Check out the following article:

http://www.walletpop.com/2011/03/24/1-1-billion-in-unclaimed-tax-refunds-could-some-be-yours/?icid=main%7Chp-laptop%7Cdl5%7Csec1_lnk1%7C207433

After finding some unexpected cash are you dying to have a cup of coffee to celebrate?

http://www.aolnews.com/2011/03/26/starbucks-coffee-sold-in-texas-funeral-home/

If you woke up after a nineteen year slumber would coffee be your first choice? Or would a juicy steak.?

My comments about the above articles:

I checked the IRS web site even though I know I have nothing coming. Better safe than sorry.

I'm not sure how to react to the coffee in the funeral home. I guess anything to make family members more comfortable during a terrible time is fine by me.

The last article bothers me in so many ways. However, what a hero attorney Ellen Eggers is. What bothered me the most in the article was the state's refusal to listen to a witness coming forward. Courts just don't like to admit they are wrong. Sad really.

You have my comments, now I would love to hear yours.

Nope, unfortunately none of that money is mine. I wish.

The answer to your question is COFFEE, OF COURSE. {g} But if I hadn't actually been sleeping, but incarcerated, I might well go for the steak. I see nothing wrong with the funeral home providing Starbucks, but I imagine if I were there to conduct business, I'd just want to get out as quickly as possible, not relax with a latte.

And here we have another nail in the coffin of eyewitness testimony, especially with cops presenting photos. I always find it hard to believe that people convicted wrongly that way are not bitter. You can bet your boots I'd be bitter, and looking for ways to sue everybody involved. I have a lot of respect for the Innocence Project.

Well, since I've filed a return every year, I suspect my name's not on the list.

My initial reaction to Starbucks in a funeral home is "tacky," quite frankly. Then again, I'm not a Starbuck's fan/customer. I cannot imagine wanting to sit there and "enjoy" a latte, after taking care of arrangements. I can't imagine being in any condition to do so, actually.

After 19 years slumber, I'd go for the coffee. After 19 years incarceration, I'd go for the steak. I was pleased to see the new guidelines being proposed. Eye witness testimony/ID has proven to be fallible, time after time. Actually, I think statistics and law of averages would find that the odds of six people identifying the same perp is pretty unusual, but that's explained by how it was handled, with the information passing from one kid to the other, along with encouragement from the officers.

Like Pat, I'm not sure I wouldn't be bitter, maybe very bitter and resentful. The man missed his son's entire childhood, for openers. There's no way anyone can give that back to him.

Hi Pat

I'd go for ham, scalloped pototes and green beans.

I'm with you re the funeral home, I would want to get my business done and get out of there. However, I see no reason not to try to make the family member more comfortable.

I am going to have to feature the Innocent Project on a blog entry because they do such damn good work. So many people benefit from them. Eyewitness testimony has convicted a lot of innocent people as have D.A.'s who are more concerned with winning then getting the right man or woman.

I would also be bitter. Very bitter.

Hi DR

Just because you file every year isn't a guarantee that you don't have unclaimed funds. People move a lot and sometimes the IRS loses track for them. When people move they really should file form 8822 with the IRS.

Here are some instances:

An estate tax return you didn't know you were part of. Maybe someone you helped along the way.

An employer that was audited and it was determined they took to much out of check for social security taxes or retirement contributions and reported the incorrect amount on your W-2 form.

A lawsuit. In several areas.

If you file every year it guaratees that you reported the correct amount from the documents you received, it doesn't guarantee that the documents you received were correct.

There are other instances but that is a start.

I had the same original reaction that you did. First, I don't like Starbucks I think it is to expensive and to strong. Also at first thought it was tacky. Then after giving it some thought, I came to the conclusion, why not. As an example may the loved one was a coffee drinker and some of your best moments were sharing a cup of coffee with him or her adn talking over old times. Why not share one last cup of coffee with them as a way to start the grieving process?

I hope the new guidelines for eye witness testimony pass muster. I think it is unusual for two people to see the same thing let alone six. I also think often lineups are stacked against who the politic think did it.

It makes three of us that would be bitter.
