Blog, Government At Work, & Reality TV Rumors

My blog was down for about 24 hours from Friday to Saturday but it magically got fixed late Saturday afternoon. Thank goodness.

For those of you dealing with the care of elderly parents please, please read the comments to my post "Updates", Kaye R, Pat, Lady Dr gave some marvelous and very helpful posts about the emotions that those of us that have the responsibility of elderly relatives have. It is one of the better group of comments since I started the blog!

For an interesting article about Social Security Disability go to this link here:

http://www.oregonlive.com/news/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/news/1217564703119820.xml&coll=7
It is so tragic that people that truly need disability are being lumped in with those trying to scam the system. Any comments about the article?

Some DANCING WITH THE STARS rumors. The cast will be announced August 25th on Good Morning America and the show will start September 22. Those rumored to be on are: Kell Pickler, Kim Kardashian, Ex VP Dan Quayle, and Lance Bass. There is also a another rumor out there that Bass will be paired with a male dancer.

According to the NY Post Sesason Five of TOP CHEF will be in New York with the constestants staying in Brooklyn. The date of the start of the show wasn't stated in the article but I would guess it to be September 10 or September 17.

May this be a great day for all of you.

I just read the article, and yes, it's tragic that they can't make proper determinations in a timely manner. OTOH, I have to partly sympathize with an understaffed agency that has to determine eligibility, especially with diagnoses like fibromyalgia, which for a long time wasn't considered a real disease. I'm not sure what the current thinking on it is. Whatever, clearly the system is badly in need of overhaul.

As to DWTS, I don't know who any of those people are, except Dan Quayle. I hope he can dance better than he can spell.

On another front, and a propos your encounter with the 92 y/o hottie, look for today's "Doonesbury" for a good tip on meeting women. Go walking with a puppy. The strip has a couple of guys planning to rent puppies for the purpose.

Hey Bill,
Wanted to stop by and say hi! Been busy finishing up my third class. I have two weeks break before next one in which I have to take an online defensive driving course! I know, hanging head in shame, I got a ticket. Glad to hear your Mom is doing well and you are too!!

I would LOVE to see Lance Bass dancing with a male partner. It's about time!

Hi Pat

Yes and it says according to the article it started getting worse in the early nineties and has progressively gotten worse. I feel for those that have to work in an understaffed enviornment.

After my visitor I did a little research on fibromyalgia and it is now a recognized disease. She is getting SSI because of it.

Kelly Pickler is now a country and western singer that had her career started by winning American Idol or at least finishing in the top five, I don't really remember. Lance Bass is a gay musician. Kim K is on a reality show and is related to the Olympain Bruce Jenner.

I'm running out to rent a dog right now.

Hi Bev

I'm not sure how I will feel about two men dancing together on the show until I actually see it. It is progress. Be interesting to see if the rumors are true.

I think it could be quite exciting, actually. Gene Kelly always said his favorite dancing partner was Fred Astaire. It would be a different type of choreography.

Curious--would how would you feel if it was two women dancing together?

Hi Bev

I'd feel the same as I would about two men dancing together, I wouldn't know until I saw it.
I'm just not sure. The good thing is it would drive the right wing nuts.

Quite an article. I've seen both sides of the issue, but there's still no excuse for the delays and numerous appeals in cases with validity.

I do know there are abuses of the system, as there are in almost any agency of this nature. And I can appreciate the difficulties of insufficient staffing. Still, there are some things that are just plain arbitrary decisions, which I suspect are based on a tired employee seeing a file and thinking, "I can't deal with one more of these."

When Walt (first husband) was dying of cancer and I'd left the State and was unemployed (which was just as well, since he needed 24/7 care), we were advised to go for SSI, while waiting for disability, because the waiting time was supposedly shorter. (At that time, disability waiting period was based on date of claim, not date of onset or inability to work. Don't know if that's still true). I've never felt like such a worm or parasite on society as dealing with SSI. Three months after filing the claim, SSI called to say they had just a few more questions. I told them to close the file, Walt had passed away eight days ago. They said they couldn't do that, he wasn't dead (really?) because their system required a minimum of five months to process a claim. I told them if Walt was alive, they needed to send him home, because I had some questions about the plumbing, which wasn't working. (Yes, on occasion I have a very sick or warped personality)

My b-i-l had Type II diabetes and advanced Hep-C when he applied. I don't recall how long it took his claim to be processed, but I know it was a long time, because my sister was working extra hours and juggling money to try to support them and the three kids and still get J the treatments he needed.

I know this sounds isolationist and probably isn't a popular attitude in today's global world, but I think we need to take a look at taking care of our own (charity begins at home), before we send millions and billions to other countries to care for their health problems and such. Once our own agencies are funded and staffed sufficiently to take care of the individuals who've paid money in for years and who desperately need assistance for valid reasons and to support their families, then we can look at what's left and send it out-of-country. Personally, I think we've got a lot of things sorta backward here at the moment.

End of vent (for today, at least)

Hi Dr

I love it when you vent. The delays do very from state to state and Oregon is one of the worse. The second article goes into the reasons for the delays.

I'm sorry for all the trauma you had to go through to try to get disability for Walt. You are ready dealing with a ton of emotions from someone you love having cancer. Then to be made to feel like a worm on top of it, well that is just tagic.

I completely agree with you that we need to take care of our own first before we take care of the rest of the world. It is almost like caregiving, if you don't take care of yourself you won't be able to take care of a relative. Charity starts at home. I'm hoping we can end the War and use the money to fix the domestic problems we have here. I just don't see it happening anytime soon.

Lance will be dancing with a "MAIL" dancer? Are they bringing John Ratzenberger back to play Kliff Klaven for the part? LOL

William J. said...

Hi Lisa

Good to see you and hope things are well with you.

I missed the typo and edited it so that it now reads "male" instead of "mail"

The latest is that Bass will be on but he won't be paired with a male dancer.
