No Pain, No Gain

Most of you know about the accident that left my left foot partially paralyzed. It doesn't keep me from doing things it just makes it harder for me to do those things. I can dance, but with limited movement in the foot it makes it harder for me to dance than those with normal movement in their foot. I can run but again with limited movement, it makes it harder for me to run than the normal dudes.

Another problem is sometimes with limited circulation there will be blisters or sores on the foot that have to be surgically removed. I usally have it done twice a year. It is an out patient surgery and really doesn't take very long but it keeps me inactive for a day. After the office visit I am requested by the doctor to stay off of my foot for 24 hours and to use a cane for a day to take the weight off. After the 24 hours I am back to the way I was before. So that is where I was yesterday. Sitting in an easy chair finishing the Harlen Coban novel and hobbling around my house.

At the doctor yesterday I got some absolutely amazing news. Good news. I have always had feeling in the left foot but that feeling is mostly pain, not really severe pain more like a minor toothache. In the past two months that pain has intensified. Some days really intense mind blowing pain. Before the procedure/surgery yesterday I brought it up with the doctor. It turns out that the pain is a great thing. After all these years the nerves are starting to regenerate and I am getting both more feeling and more movement in the foot!! It will never be a 100% but the doctor thinks it may get up to as much as 80% from about the 40% it is now. The doctor has no idea why the nerves started to regenerate, it could be all the walking, it could be the weight loss, or it simply could be a miracle. I really don't care why, I am just happy about this. I've never felt better about pain! I am so excited I can hardly type this. I did want to share this with my friends here. Thank you all for being a part of my life!

May miracles happen for you today!

Great news, Bill! We all know that pain is a symptom of something else. And at least this time, the "something else" is a good thing.

Bill, this is great news! I am so incredibly excited for you. And as I read it, decided to stick my nose in.I hadn't realized you had nerve damage, or would have mentioned this when I discovered it.

Are you familiar with anodyne therapy? It's non-invasive infared light treatment. We found out about it a month ago. Mom was showing signs of prepioception, which is nerve damage or degeneration and not uncommon in diabetics. We talked with her podiatrist about it and he did a couple tests and recommended the anodyne treatment be given after she has PT. It regenerates nerves in roughly 90% of the cases they've studied to date. Scary thing was, Mom had no pain or tingling, but tests indicated there were nerves that had no feeling, which was a part of the balance problem.

She's half way through the twelve treatments (which medicare and most insurance companies with cover) and there's a visible difference in her balance and in her response to the tests. In addition, the infared heals the blisters and sores often experienced by diabetics. It's used for other issues too and has been found to help fibromyalgia, for instance.

Anyway, we just sort of stumbled across this, by asking some questions and, again, our PT gal picking up on the propioception no one else had checked, and I checked out a couple medical journals and the journal of Podiatry and it's valid. WebMD, unfortunately, only shows the promo by the company, but further digging got me what I wanted to know. If your nerves are starting to regenerate, it might be worth checking to see if this will (a) hasten the process and (b) bring them back even more.

Celebrate!!!

Thank you. I was really worried that the pain was a sign of something bad and was so relieved when it was a good thing.

I never take it as you sticking your nose in, I always know where you heart is and that is the right place. I know you and I know you want to help me. Thanks for the information because it gives me even more hope.

The nerver damage isn't the nerve in the foots. The and I always spell this darn word wrong is the psiatic nerve. It was cut in the accident. That nerve is about the size of you thumb or larger and on an average heals at the rate of 1/16 of an inch a year. That is why there has always been feeling, it has continually been healing.

I googles Anodyne Therapy and am definitely going to look into and most likely try it.

I am so pleased that is has helped your mom.

If the therapy does (a) hasten the process and (b) bring them back even more, I will fly back to South Carolina to do a line dance with you!

That's wonderful news, Bill! It sure took a long time coming, but it's wonderful all the same. I'm sending vibes that regeneration continues apace (maybe with some help from the therapy that DR recommended - brava DR!). And that pain will cease to be part of the process soonest!

Hi Pst

As always thank you for your good thoughts. The pain lessens as I excercise, it begins as a sign of feeling in the foot than as I get more movement subsides a bit. It may be there a while but I can handle it because I will focus on the benefits.

I'm holding you to that, my friend! Aside from wanting you to meet Himself and Mom, I want to take to OUR Shakespeare in the Park, to a line dance class and to the Friday night shag/linedance party SA holds, since Himself refuses to consider dancing and I've not been! (Himself reaks out in hives at the sight or mention of a dance floor). I'll have the guest house ready -- an excellent opportunity to promote my theory you might enjoy RVing (another good opportunity to meet folks, as there are numerous singles RV clubs that caravan in small Trackers or rigs and have "meets).

Hi Kaye

OK on the way to S.C. I will make sure there is a layover in Texas and we can line dance there!

Line dancing -
Kaye R, don't know where you are in Texas, but are you familiar with Scooter Lee and Dancing for the Dream? It's a non-profit that raises money for diabetes and promotes overall good health for everyone, but especially those over fifty, through one-day line dance seminars. These are held all over the country -- actually around the world. Went last year and to the second one today (and am pooped!!!) Six hours of dance, with a short lunch break and for everyone from beginners to experienced and Scooter and the instructors have personalities that keep everyone laughing. Had 180 dancers on the floor today. You might want to check out www.dancingforthedream.ocm. (Am I allowed to post that here, Bill?)

Bill, I still encourage you to check out line dancing as one of your social options. A lot of community centers and schools and senior centers (those over 50) do classes and the ratio is usually 1 guy to 10 gals and everyone is friendly and welcomes "newbies" and classes range from beginning on up. You don't need a partner for line dance, but might find one there for ballroom dance and such. Lots of folks line dance because they don't have a partner for partner dancing styles.

Hi Dr

You are allowed to post anything here any time. We have no rules here. There isn't even a rule that you have to say nice things about me. And if it is about a charity by all means post it. Also post any links that you want. This blog is your blog too!!

I am thinking about taking some dance classes through the adult education program at the community colleges here.

LadyDr -- Thanks!! I wasn't aware of the Line Dancing for a Dream. I don't see where they will be in Texas through what they have posted so far, but I've saved this web page in my favorites and will keep watching.

Being Texas, we have a plethora of Country Western clubs here. The popularity of line dancing comes and goes. I haven't been out dancing for over 2 years and that's a shame as I really enjoy it. Going to a club by my self is an obstacle I've yet to hurdle... but it's on my list. Thanks for sharing the info!

Great news Bill! Wonderful that the pain means something GOOD for a change! Long may you progress.

Lady DR said...

Kaye - I'm almost certain they do seminars in TX, although not sure where.

As to going out to the clubs -- that's not something I do. Not only am I comfortable going myself, but I'm just not comfy about taking evenings away from Himself and I. I know several women who leave hubbies home to go out and dance, it's just not my thing. Maybe because I lost one husband to cancer and almost lost Himself to a heart attack.

However, do some checking around at community centers or, if you're over 50/55, check with senior organizations. Both seem to offer line dance classes at least once a week and most have experienced/ advanced, as well as beginner. This is how I get my fix on Wednesday afternoons and I could also go Thursday afternoons if I watned. When Himself was traveling out of country, I'd go to the community center one evening a week and some of the folks from there went to a local club one evening a week. With my current afternoon class, several of them go to Country Earl's on Thursday evenings together, mostly single/widowed gals.

When Bill comes back here, you could come too. We'll put one of you in the rig and the other in the craft/guest room (so long as no one is afraid of/allergic to dogs) and party for a few days (grin). There are a couple local motels, for those who like more privacy. Himself doesn't dance, but he does like people.

Gee, any other line dancers out there?
