Ten Movies To See Before You Die

This is Oscar week. Sunday on ABC is the Oscar Telecast, The Super Bowl of The Movies. That makes this a week to celebrate movies. And that is what we are discussing today! Movies to celebrate!

The People that read the following web site:

http://shopping.aol.com/movies-music?ncid=AOLCOMMshopDYNLprim0001&icid=200100125x1219483780x1201249311

Voted on their top ten movies to see before you die. Those movies are as follows:

Shawshank Redemption - loved

Witness - suspenseful

Mama Mia - barf

Life Is Beautiful - lovely but intense

Amelia - didn’t see

The Deer Hunter - to violent

The Others - didn’t see

It’s A Wonderful Life -ahhhhhhhhhh

Citizen Kane - pseudo intellectual kind of movie

The Notebook - my mom and dad’s relationship

While I like some of the movies on the above list I am not sure I would classify most of them as movies to see before you die movies, my list would be as follows:

Shindler’s List - intense, heroic

Dr. Zhivago - beautiful music

Sound of Music - ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

The Graduate - Dustin Hoffman

Atonement - romantic and disloyalty all in one

The Godfather Series - let me make you an offer you can’t refuse.

Sting - the entertainer

Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid - entertaining

An Affair To Remember - romantic to the ultimate level

To Kill A Mockingbird - why this isn’t one everyone’s list is beyond me.

I could do so many more! Which list do you like best? What movie that you would drag people to that is missing from the above lists? Do you have a Top Ten movies to see before you die list? Who is your favorite actor? (For me it is Dustin Hoffman), Who is your favorite actress? (Kate Winslet/Meryl Streep/
Sandra Bullock).

May this be an entertaining day for you and may everyone make you feel like a star today!

I've seen probably the same number of movies on both lists, but I prefer your list to the first list. "Top" movies is so subjective and depends so much on personal taste!

As for favorite actor, Hoffman is up there, but I also like Anthony Hopkins.

Anybody who has read me for more than a month probably knows that I loved Judy Garland. But for living actresses probably I'd go with Streep too, but if I had a long list from which to choose I'd might pick someone else.

Hi Bev

I love Judy Garland too not to mention Kathryn Hepburn or Spenser Tracy. I should have put On Golden Pond on the list and maybe even another Hoffman favorite Tootsie.

I'm not that fond of Hopkins but like you said it is just personal taste. Had Heath Ledger lived there would have been great things for him. Really sad.

This isn't on point at all but it's a local Milwaukee story that I think you will really like:

Hi Bill...I have far too many favorite movies to give you a Top 10 list...some that come to the top of my mind are: Sean Pean in I am Sam, I loved the Juno movie, as well as Atonement, for comedy my favorite I think is Steve Martin's Bringing Down the House with Queen Latifa and Dustin Hoffman in (can't think of the name where he dresses up as a woman in San Fran - not tootsie - or was that Robin Williams - too many movies too little time), and that french film - Life is Beautiful I think was one of my favorites. For animation - I saw Cars 3 times and loved the first Lion King (I'm a kid at heart after all) and I mostly love all kinds of drama or action movies as well. MY ALL TIME FAVORITE - which is on your list and amazes me that it is on your list, is An Affair to Remember. I saw that movie around 13 times as a teenager, then as many or more times as an adult and one year I bought the Video and gave them to all my "best" girlfriends for Christmas one year. Too difficult to give you an all time top 10 and as you know my favorite actor is Dustin Hoffman then comes Sean Penn. Actress I have to say Susan Sarandon ranks up there with me although she might not be #1. Many movies scratch my brain and make me think and those are the ones I seem to like the best. Have to disagree on Mama Mia - that's one of my favorite "girly" films. I saw it on stage in Vegas and loved it and also loved the movie. Another film I loved even though I've seen it on stage many many times but the film was fantastic and not seen by many as too many people thought once they saw it on stage they didn't need to see the movie - big mistake - as it was totally different on stage and that is Phantom of the Opera. I loved the film and also love it on stage. Geez, I guess I like just about anything and will go see just about anything! (A rather long note - better stop while I'm ahead!)

Hi Red

I loved your message and didn't think it was long enough. Gosh so much to cover. Phantom of The Opera is by far my favorite theatre. Love Michael Crawford. Also love the song "All I Ask of You"

I think the movie you are thinking about was MRS. DOUBTFIRE and it was Robin Williams. Also Sally Field and Pierce Bronsan.

Which brings me to why I didn't like Mama Mia. Pierce Bronsan singing. I can sing better than Pierce Bronsan and any musical that has an actor that I sing better than is in trouble!

I loved Bringing Down The House but maybe it is a guy thing but I thought Wild Hogs was hysterical. Another Steve Martin with Lily Tomlin called All of Me was also very funny.

Life Is Beautiful was amazingly touching.

I like romantic movies and romantic comedies and have been known to survive some chick flicks. An Affair to Remember had Deborah Kerr along with Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffanys are women that I fell in love with.

Speaking of Dustin Hoffman another movie that I would have put on my list had it been longer would have been Kramer Vs. Kramer. Then Paul Newman in The Verdict. Not to mention the Born Ultamatium series. And George Clooney in Michael Clayton. Then Warren Beatty in Reds. Well I could go on but can't remember the name of the movie with Barbara Streisand and Robert Redford.

Susan Sarandon is a marvelous actress, loved her in THE CLIENT.

Now I will stop!

The one with Redford & Streisand is THE WAY WE WERE. I like your list better than the other one, and I sure agree about TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. A list of favorite movies can go on and on and on, so I won't do that, but just add three that are all-time favorites of mine: A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS, THE LION IN WINTER, and LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. That would imply I only love historical and costume epics, which is not so at all, but I always think of those three when all-time faves are called for.

You're right it was Mrs. Doubtfire. I love different movies for the different reactions or feelings they evoke in me. There have been some movies I've seen that I didn't think I'd like and wound up loving them. So, I don't limit myself and wind up going to almost anything and everything. Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant were in the An Affair To Remember movie correct - I didn't like the remake by Warren Beatty and Annette Benning (sp?). I love going to see all the movies I can although this past year I don't think I saw any that are being nominated which upsets me because I always like to see all of the ones that are featured at the Academy Awards. For some reason I had seen so many interviews and so many articles about all of them that I felt I had already seen them all. As far as Mama Mia - it's an uplifting joyful movie with music and dance which I love so I can overlook Pierce Bronsan's singing but agree he was probably the worst (and I think he's admitted that himself).

Oh, and PS, I did read Ellen's link, and it's a lovely story.

William J. said...

Hi Pat

You are like me it is so much historical dramas or comedy or dramas it is the acting, the scenery, and story regardless of genre.

THE WAY WE WERE is exactly the movie I was thinking about.

Thanks to your list I have two more movies on my list to rent
just add three that are all-time favorites of mine: A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS and THE LION IN WINTER. I've never seen them.

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA was great!

Hi Red

On a blog I go to every woman loved Mama Mia every guy didn't. One of those rare split exactly along the gender line movies.

I'm like you I like different movies for different reasons and for different moods. I'm going to suggest a couple of movies for you. If you liked Life Is Beautiful you most likely will also like The Boy In The Striped Pajamas but be forewarned the ending is one of the most intense endings you will ever see in any movie.

The other two are WAIT UNTIL DARK with Audrey Hepburn, Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. and Alan Arkin.

The the other one has never been transferred to cd so you might have to go to a classic video to get it but it is DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS with Robert Preston, Shelley Winters, and Dorothy McQuire set right before World War II.

I went to the DARK KNIGHT thinking I'd never like because I don't like movies based on comic books and ended up absolutely loving.

The Remake of AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER was horrible, you can't improve upon perfection.

Like you I try to see all movies before the Oscars that are nominated but this year missed two. THE READER AND MILK.

And I will be watching the Oscar telecast Sunday!

Hi Pat

Thanks for taking the time to read Ellen's link. I love the story!

Not to wreck your statistics, Bill, but I didn't like MAMMA MIA. The editing was too frenetic, the music was forgettable, the singing was mostly pedestrian, and the story was silly.

You never saw my two favorite movies??? Rent them! Now!

WAIT UNTIL DARK was a Very Scary Movie. And a very good one. I think it was originally a TV movie, but it was sure better than most of them. A must-see.

If the ending of the movie of THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS is like what happened in the book, it must be devastating!

William J. said...

Hi Pat

Even more devastating if you hadn't read the book and didn't know what was coming. At the end of the movie everyone just sat there for the longest time.

It doesn't surprise me that you didn't like Mama Mia. I actually think two of us are not really controlled by gender. I mean if we posted things without names attached, including out likes and dislikes, I doubt if very few could guess our gender.

There is one scene that has to do with a refrigerator in WAIT UNTIL DARK that was voted as one of the most 100 frigtening scenes in movies. Even when I know what is coming I still jump.
