Women & Money

Before today's post group we need positive thoughts, healing vibes, and prayers for our friend Maryanne and her husband, TJ. Maryanne got in between one of her dogs fighting with her son's dog. Maryanne's left hand is pretty much ripped apart. To make matters worse she has a history of a certain type of bacterial infection. The hand specialist told the doctors not to do any stitching until they could be sure there's no danger of infection from the dog bites. They have no medical insurance. Please include in your prayers a request they can get the financial assistance they need. In addition to the prayers and good thoughts does anyone have any knowledge of Medicaid or anything that can help them that we can pass on to TJ? Since they are in Colorado if there is anyone out there with the knowledge of Colorado programs it would be appreciated to pass that knowledge on to us. I know all my thoughts and prayers are with Maryanne and TJ for recovered health, financial aid, and for the loss they are going to suffer because they have to put their dog down.

On another blog family note. I checked Mary Z's blog because I was worried about the floods in Tennessee. Her and her husband are fine and getting ready to go on a trip.

The answer to yesterday's Who Am I was Mother Jones. No who I am today, just a test to see how much you know about women and money. Answer either true or false to the following four statements. You can also put your answers in the comment section of the blog.

Women focus on non-financial household roles while men deal with the finances.

Women are emotional about money.

Women are impulsive shoppers and equally impulsive with financial decisions.

Women don't have the math skills necessary to make successful financial decisions.

You can find all the answers in the following article:

Are surprised by the results?

First, Maryanne and TJ already have plenty of good wishes coming from me. And I'm glad to hear that Mary Z and family are all right.

As to the myths about women and money, my immediate reaction to Myth #1 is that it's false, or it certainly should be. Howerver, there are families I know of where the wife has not much idea of where the money is or how much of it they have, let alone how to deal with it if left alone with it. I think that's a real shame.

The rest, I also considered false, except maybe for the last one about math, which is a real bugaboo for my daughter, whose degree is in math. She feels that girls are steered away from math in school, and if they weren't, they'd be every bit as good at it as the males. I don't consider myself proficient in math, at least higher math. But handling money isn't math, it's arithmetic, and I can do that just fine, thank you. {g}

Hi Pat

I am going to hold off on what the article says until people have a chance to read react to the statements.

My mom always managed the money in our family. Dad neither cared to or had the skills to.

Thanks for posting about MA and TJ. I haven't talked with them yet today, but was able to forward an email from my cousin in CSC, whom I called last night, and Cathy's cousin has offered assistance, so at least they have some information.

Good news on Mary Z being okay! I hadn't realized they were in TN.

Women and money - I agree it's mostly myth. I know very few women who aren't aware of family finances and a great number, like me, who handle the bulk of the finances, simply because they're better at stretching available funds, seeing the long haul, hunting for bargains and dealing with details. This may be because a lot of us lived on a shoe string or less, when we were starting out in the working world.

Hi DR

Keep us up to date on Maryanne and TJ, I want the best for them.

Mary Z is in Chattanoga. Floods are in Nashville but I was still kind of worried.

I also think women do control the finances in most marriages.

All good wishes to Maryanne and TJ - what a terrible accident! Do they have any homeowner's insurance that might help defray expenses?

Thanks for the good thoughts. The flooding in Nashville was (and is) incredible. They're going to be months and months getting things back to "normal". Fortunately our daughter in N'ville didn't have any flooding at her house.

Re finances - in our household, I've always handled all the day-to-day stuff, paying bills, buying household things, etc. John does the investments and "big" things.

And, yes, we're at our oldest daughter's in South Carolina to see a granddaughter visiting home from CA.

Mary Z, where in SC, please? That's home for us.

MA, stoic that she is, posted a short msg in the S16 group (it only took her an hour, I learned when we talked). She's in pain, of course. They see the hand specialist tomorrow AM and she's been told not to change the dressing, even though it's bleeding through, so she's wrapped in plastic. The bacteria is bacterial endiocartis (sp) and she's had two bouts of it, one of which left some heart damage.

I talked with her a bit ago. TJ took Darlin' out for a run, let her chase squirrels, shared jerky with her, then put her down and buried her on Rampart Ridge. As MA says, it was probably a harder day for him, than her. I suspect they'll be spending the summer in CSC, what with initial healing, PT, surgery, PT, possible reconstruction of the hand. Fortunately, no bones were broken, which is about the only good thing about the whole mess.

She was so thankful to know others are sending prayers, positive vibes and white light. We'll know more after she sees the surgeon tomorrow.

Hi Mary Z

Good to see you and see that you are all right!

They were at their son's house so I do think they are checking with their son's homeowner policy.

I am so relieved that your daughter avoided the flooding!

And I do think in 75% of the cases women do most of the finances.

Hi DR

I'm not sure in South Carolina everyone is but you show up as posting from Pelzer and she shows as posting from Fort Mill.

I hope the specialist is able to do something quickly for Maryanne.
Do let us know what the surgeon says.

Pfooey - I'm on the north-west edge of Greenville, in Travelers Rest. Not even sure where Pelzer is, quite frankly. Nor do I know where Ft Mill is, but at least Mary Z now knows where I *really* am.

Yes, I'll keep you posted on MA, as we go along. I caught her just before she was to take a pain med, so she was relatively coherent this afternoon

Hi DR

Pelzer is on 418 near Williamston. Fort Mill is off of Interstate 77 not far from Rock Hill.

They must be where the cell towers are that are closets to you.

Still not sure where Pelzer is, but Rock Hill is about ... maybe an hour from here? We've been to hamfests there.

Mary Z... can you give any help? How long are your in the area?
