Going Ugly

The statement in the article "women are more attracted to guys in relationships because they have "proven they can commit," at first surprised me. That was until I remembered that wild period right after college when we were doing the bar scene and a lot of my single male friends would wear wedding rings because women would pay more attention to them. Sad but true.

An Update Of Enlightenments

I'm going to do next week first because I have a lot to say about last week which was a roller coaster of emotions.
On the agenda next week is three days and two nights at Mom's. Monday is a lunch appointment with an old friend. Today I am working on my blog, grocery shopping, cleaning house, mowing the lawn, and sending out some answers to e-mails. Friday starts the holiday weekend that I am sure will include a bbq.
Last week. Sunday was a lunch out with Mom. Monday was work day. Tuesday was a birthday jaunt for lunch and entertainment at Spirit Mountain Casino with mom and two of my favorite cousins. A beautiful day, 82 and Sunny. Made for a stunning drive. Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday were at Mom's. Saturday was errand day.
I really had a great birthday. One of the nicest ones I have ever had. It started with a surprise birthday picnic on Saturday and kept going until I received my last birthday card yesterday. One of the most pleasant things about my birthday was an enlightenment. If you have children you know you have impacted another human being's life. You have put your stamp on your sons' and daughters' lives. However, if you are single without children you just never know if you really impacted another human being's life.
When I met Jon shortly after I opened my CPA practice he was basically homeless and working out of the trunk of his car selling time for advertising on radio shows. When I sold my practice several year later he owned twenty Papa Murphy's, a house in Portland, a winter condo in Palm Springs, and rentals in California and Arizona. He became a millionaire many times over. I hadn't heard from Jon for two or three years. He called on my birthday and sang me the happy birthday song. When I told him I have told his story many times over the years because it is my favorite story of my years in business, you know what his answer was? "I couldn't have done it without you, your advise mad me a millionaire." I was kind of stunned by that. Pleased but stunned. I also asked myself the question, "If I can help make him a millionaire, why can't I make me one."
Suzie worked for me for about a year. She was really beautiful Very young but beautiful. Her dad had never been in her life. She would confide in me some stories. I would just listen and if she asked would give her some advise. She is now happily married. She is now a flight attendant. On my Facebook page on my birthday she posted the following:
"Happy Birthday to one of the MOST wonderful and amazing people I have ever known in my life! You were such a mentor in my younger years and I will always thank you that. I am truly blessed to call you William J. Dahn aka Bill my life long friend! I HOPE YOUR BIRTHDAY IS AS SPECIAL AS YOU ARE! XOXO'S ♥ Hugs, your friend."
I really never knew I ever mentored anyone. I loved the picnic, the drive and day at the casino was amazing, the number of happy birthday wishes on Facebook were overwhelming, the cards I got were more than expected and were just so enjoyable, the gifts were beautiful, the love shown to me on the special will last forever but the thing I will most take away from a birthday that I was originally dreading is the comments from Jon and Suzie.

A Surprise Update.
Happy Fathers Day Everyone. May this be a great day for anyone that had a positive impact on a child's life.
Last week. One dinner out, two seminars, two nights three days at Mom's and a picnic that turned out to be a surprise party for me. My brother's eldest daughter, Kelli, was visiting from Wyoming so my sister but together a picnic without me knowing it. Due to rain it was held at Mom's house. Kelli and her three kids (her husband was at work). Kristi, her husband, and their two children were there. Greg, his wife and eldest daughter were there. Kelli, Kristi, & Greg are my brothers' kids. Of course Mom, Sis, and brother-in-law were there. Three of by brothers cousins were there as was their aunt Ginger. And of course me. Nineteen in all.
There is nothing like the love of children. It is so pure. You can click on all pictures to make them larger.

Tuesday my sister and my Mom are taking me to the casino for my birthday. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are at Mom's. I'm not sure if I will miss days on the blog but there is a chance of that. I am really looking forward the week starting the 26th. One dinner engagement and one night at Mom's. Life gets easier.

46 percent of fathers say they had at least one child outside of marriage.
46 percent of dads say that dads today play a bigger role than they did twenty to thirty years ago. 45 percent say they are less involved.
57 percent say that it is more difficult to be a dad today than it was twenty to thirty years ago.
27 percent with kids 18 or younger live away from at least on of their children which is double the percentage in 1960.
Married fathers who live with their children spend about six and a half hours a week on child care. This is up about 3 percent from 1960. Better but it is still half the time mothers put in.
13 percent of fathers with a college degree have children outside marriage compared with 56 percent of those that didn't finish high school.
Age makes a difference with 75 percent of fathers ages 20-24 having children out of wedlock, 36 percent for fathers between 35-44.

Fugitive, Women, & 39
First up today is what our high school kids are up to:

That is just to stupid for words. My guess is some innocent person on the way home from work or shopping our an evening outing is killed when they run into a car without headlights. I hope there are steps taken to outlaw "Fugitive" before some gets hurt or dies from stupidity.

Back From Boredom
I'm back. Done with the seminars and two nights at Mom's. I am home for a couple of hours then back to Mom's for a couple of days.
The first seminar was on Estate and Trusts tax returns. The second seminar was about Social Security and Medicare. The following is what we play for:
Some states don't bother with taking attendance so you get the credit whether you sign the attendance sheet sent out the last hour of the seminar or not. Sign in you are good to go. Oregon is a lot more anal than that. You sign in in the morning and sign the attendance sheet in the afternoon.
The dinner at Nancie's went well. She is an excellent cook and I really liked her friends. There was another couple there and I was glad for that. It kind of gave us more to talk about. Right before her friends got there Nancie told me that Chris was her ex husband. That was kind of weird but he was really nice. They were married very young and only married for a couple of years. They were just to young. He and his new wife, also named Chris, have been married thirty years. They were really interesting to talk to because they are retired and traveling the world. I also found out that Nancie is an excellent painter. She has held her paintings and held show at several art galleries.

Back To Health Update
I'm am back to full health. Yesterday I finally got my energy back to one hundred per cent. I found out two things, I was sicker than I thought I was and the recovery process is longer as you get older. I'm really glad to be where I was before the hospital causing illness.
Last week. Sunday was Mom to lunch. Monday was an intended day of rest but mom got really ill. She didn't really remember where she was and couldn't remember the name of her second son. It really scared the heck out my sister and I. It turned out to be a bout with low blood sugar. She recovered and is fine. Tuesday was actually a day of rest. Wednesday was an accounting seminar in the morning and at Mom's in the afternoon and at night. Thursday was at Mom's all day. My friend Nancie came over in the afternoon to treat Mom's feet and mine. Friday was a day of rest but I started feeling good enough to do some exercises to get my strength back. Saturday I was feeling pretty well so I took my clothes to the dry cleaners, went to the pharmacy, grocery shopped, and went on a mission to see how to get to Nancie's house. In between there I also took Mom to lunch. In addition I bought some Fathers' Day and get well cards for various friends and relatives.
Next week is one of those from hell. There will definitely not be a blog entry on Wednesday and there may not be one on Thursday as well. Today I am going to the movie Super 8. Tomorrow Nancie invited me to dinner at her house to meet some friends of hers. I know how to get there now so I will be on time. Tuesday is an all day accounting seminar and then the night at Mom's. Wednesday is an all day accounting seminar and then the night at Mom's. Thursday is at Mom's all day. Friday and Saturday are recovery day. You all will be proud of me though, when I saw how full my schedule was and not wanting a relapse I called a client and delayed a work assignment. I've been with this client since 1980 so I knew he would be understanding and he was. That really does take the pressure off.
The blog is now yours. Fill me in on our lives. That really is the thing I enjoy most, hearing about what is going on with you.

Grads, Foods, & Intrigue
Happy Friday. In the second in a series of articles, more about today's graduates.

I was really surprised at some of the statistics in the above article. Non-traditional graduates are almost forty percent.
