QUOTE:

The answer to yesterday's who said this quote was Albert Einstein. Today's quote is "Cauliflower is nothing but cabbage with a college education." This dude was born in 1835 and died in 1910. He had both a pen name and a birth name, most known by the pen name. He was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty. However, he lacked financial acumen. Though he made a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, he squandered it on various ventures, in particular the Paige Compositor, and was forced to declare bankruptcy. He was born during a visit by Halley's Comet, and predicted that he would "go out with it" as well. He died the day following the comet's subsequent return. He was lauded as the "greatest American humorist of his age. William Faulkner called him "the father of American literature." He patented three inventions, including an "Improvement in Adjustable and Detachable Straps for Garments" (to replace

suspenders) and a history trivia game. Most commercially successful was a self-pasting scrapbook; a dried adhesive on the pages only needed to be moistened before use. If you fill in the blank in the following quote; "Never the ________should meet", you should be answer the question of Who Said today's quote?

Good People, An Update, & Cars.

CONGRATULATIONS to the University of South Carolina for winning the 2011 College World Series baseball championship. I now think that the father did the right thing by quitting his job to see his son play. On another subject stay tune as Friday or Saturday there will pictures of the official blog dog who also hails from South Carolina.

People doing good things.

PRESIDENTS

Yesterday's answer was James Monroe. We have ran out of presidents so we are now starting famous quotes in history. I will give the quote and a little about the person making the quote and then you will tell me who he or she is. "If A is a success in life, then A equals x plus y plus z. Work is x; y is play; and z is keeping your mouth shut." He was born in 1879 and died in 1955. Born in Germany he became a very famous physicist. He published more than 300 scientific papers along with over 150 non-scientific works. His warnings to and meetings with FDR led to the Manhattan Project. Despite being white he was a member of the NAACP and fought for civil right. If you think of relatives if might help you answer who is this. Wait. Maybe it is relativity and not relatives you need to think of. Who is the author of the quote?

PRESIDENTS:

Yesterday's president was Calvin Coolidge. Today's president was quoted as saying, "The American Continents, by the free and independent condition which they have assumed and maintained, are henceforth not to be considered as subjects by any European powers." Born in 1758 and died in 1831. He was not Marilyn's brother. Florida was purchased during his reign. He served during the "Era of Good Feelings." Think of a Doctrine and the number five and you can answer the question, Which President Am I?

Going Ugly

First up is an article by a women suggesting that women should go ugly. The article is by Vicki Larson.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/vicki-larson/picking-the-wrong-mate_b_873044.html

The statement in the article "women are more attracted to guys in relationships because they have "proven they can commit," at first surprised me. That was until I remembered that wild period right after college when we were doing the bar scene and a lot of my single male friends would wear wedding rings because women would pay more attention to them. Sad but true.

Next up is the rebuttal of the above article written by Tom Matlack.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tom-matlack/men-need-to-be-ugly-to-be_b_878253.html

I loved this quote from the article:

"The paradox of life is that we often have to fail utterly and completely before we can truly succeed. We are told over and over again that its what you have, and what you look like, that determines success when it is actually who you are that counts."

Now the two authors debate their articles:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tom-matlack/should-women-really-go-ug_b_880110.html?icid=main%7Chp-laptop%7Cdl7%7Csec1_lnk1%7C216522

Who do you think won? I am going to stick up for my gender on this one. I liked Tom's article better than Vicki's. Comment Away.

PRESIDENTS

"After all, the chief business of the American people is business." Said the president that was born in 1872 and died in 1933. He became president after serving as vice president to a president that died in office. He was later elected for a second term. He was the honcho during the roaring twenties and before the great depression. Although known more by his middle name his first name was John. He spoke out in favor of the civil rights of African Americans and Catholics.[128] He appointed no known members of the Ku Klux Klan to office; indeed the Klan lost most of its influence during his term. If you know of the number thirty you can answer the question, Which President Am I?

An Update Of Enlightenments

"He that cannot forgive others breaks the bridge over which he must pass himself; for every man has need to be forgiven. " Thomas Fuller

I'm going to do next week first because I have a lot to say about last week which was a roller coaster of emotions.

On the agenda next week is three days and two nights at Mom's. Monday is a lunch appointment with an old friend. Today I am working on my blog, grocery shopping, cleaning house, mowing the lawn, and sending out some answers to e-mails. Friday starts the holiday weekend that I am sure will include a bbq.

Last week. Sunday was a lunch out with Mom. Monday was work day. Tuesday was a birthday jaunt for lunch and entertainment at Spirit Mountain Casino with mom and two of my favorite cousins. A beautiful day, 82 and Sunny. Made for a stunning drive. Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday were at Mom's. Saturday was errand day.

I really had a great birthday. One of the nicest ones I have ever had. It started with a surprise birthday picnic on Saturday and kept going until I received my last birthday card yesterday. One of the most pleasant things about my birthday was an enlightenment. If you have children you know you have impacted another human being's life. You have put your stamp on your sons' and daughters' lives. However, if you are single without children you just never know if you really impacted another human being's life.

When I met Jon shortly after I opened my CPA practice he was basically homeless and working out of the trunk of his car selling time for advertising on radio shows. When I sold my practice several year later he owned twenty Papa Murphy's, a house in Portland, a winter condo in Palm Springs, and rentals in California and Arizona. He became a millionaire many times over. I hadn't heard from Jon for two or three years. He called on my birthday and sang me the happy birthday song. When I told him I have told his story many times over the years because it is my favorite story of my years in business, you know what his answer was? "I couldn't have done it without you, your advise mad me a millionaire." I was kind of stunned by that. Pleased but stunned. I also asked myself the question, "If I can help make him a millionaire, why can't I make me one."

Suzie worked for me for about a year. She was really beautiful Very young but beautiful. Her dad had never been in her life. She would confide in me some stories. I would just listen and if she asked would give her some advise. She is now happily married. She is now a flight attendant. On my Facebook page on my birthday she posted the following:

"Happy Birthday to one of the MOST wonderful and amazing people I have ever known in my life! You were such a mentor in my younger years and I will always thank you that. I am truly blessed to call you William J. Dahn aka Bill my life long friend! I HOPE YOUR BIRTHDAY IS AS SPECIAL AS YOU ARE! XOXO'S ♥ Hugs, your friend."

I really never knew I ever mentored anyone. I loved the picnic, the drive and day at the casino was amazing, the number of happy birthday wishes on Facebook were overwhelming, the cards I got were more than expected and were just so enjoyable, the gifts were beautiful, the love shown to me on the special will last forever but the thing I will most take away from a birthday that I was originally dreading is the comments from Jon and Suzie.

The blog is now yours. Update me on your lives! Share your joys, concerns, what you did last week and what is on the agenda for next week, post anything you damn well please. In other words, comment away.

Time, Sleepovers, and Mom Likes Me Best.

The answer to yesterday's president was James A. Garfield.

First up is a little bit of a warning about time and clocks:

Next up is about sleepovers. But I think where the sleep over is being held will surprise you:

For the final article it was a choice of a column about why women should ugly down or one about what gender of baby we prefer. The ugly women article talks about why women should purposely hide their beautiful features and when there is a choice chose ugly. I chose the baby article because Mom likes me best:

Yesterday's answer was Ronald Reagan. Today's president was quoted as saying , "I have seen the sea lashed into fury and tossed into the spray, and its grandeur moves the soul of the dullest man; but I remember that is is not the billows, but the calm level of the sea from which all heights and depths are measured." The president was born in 1831 and died in 1881. Was the cat named after him? He was the second US president to be assassinated. He had the second shortest term of any president. Cancer, Health Care, & Dads.

Day two at Mom's. Since my overnight hospital stay I adopted a new way to think and to control my stress. Basically it is take a deep breath and not react. It sure does make the stays here a lot more fun.

First up is some good news on cancer:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/06/20/cancer-vaccine_n_880403.html?icid=main%7Chp-laptop%7Cdl10%7Csec3_lnk1%7C216555

Then a bit of sad news. It is just really tragic that in America a man found himself in this position:

Art, Dating, Dresses, & Driving.

First up this is for Pat. Here is a link to where you can see my friend Nancie's art work. This was a show she had at a salon. All the paintings on the bottom row are hers.

http://www.eclipsethesalon.com/nancieiandNimueimages.html

Today starts three days at Mom's. Saturday will be a new dawn for me because things will go back to normal.

Talk about an idiotic move by a dating site:

http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/06/20/beauties-only-dating-site-sparks-outrage-by-dumping-30000-ugly-people/?icid=main%7Chp-laptop%7Cdl2%7Csec3_lnk3%7C216475

What is beautiful anyhow? We all have a different idea of it. Who left it up to them to determine what I think is beautiful?

How valuable are the dresses that you own? Here one I can't really afford to buy as a gift:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20110619/en_nm/us_monroe;_ylt=AjJinhTHzjobDkBK_jHpZZqs0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTNlNXJ2ZTJtBGFzc2V0A25tLzIwMTEwNjE5L3VzX21vbnJvZQRjY29kZQNtb3N0cG9wdWxhcgRjcG9zAzEwBHBvcwM3BHB0A2hvbWVfY29rZQRzZWMDeW5faGVhZGxpbmVfbGlzdARzbGsDbWFyaWx5bm1vbnJv

I found the following article interesting:

It seems like the ban on driving doesn't even follow their own religious teachings.

This words were part of the orders he issued as commander in chief. One week after these orders were issued the troops destroyed a statue of the King, melted it down, and used it as bullets for their army. Some wanted him to be king but he refused. A Surprise Update.

Happy Fathers Day Everyone. May this be a great day for anyone that had a positive impact on a child's life.

Last week. One dinner out, two seminars, two nights three days at Mom's and a picnic that turned out to be a surprise party for me. My brother's eldest daughter, Kelli, was visiting from Wyoming so my sister but together a picnic without me knowing it. Due to rain it was held at Mom's house. Kelli and her three kids (her husband was at work). Kristi, her husband, and their two children were there. Greg, his wife and eldest daughter were there. Kelli, Kristi, & Greg are my brothers' kids. Of course Mom, Sis, and brother-in-law were there. Three of by brothers cousins were there as was their aunt Ginger. And of course me. Nineteen in all.

There is nothing like the love of children. It is so pure. You can click on all pictures to make them larger.

This is from Emma, Kelli's youngest daughter, Charlie.

This is from Emma, Kelli's next eldest daughter:

This is what Kelli's eldest son, Grover, made for me:

These are the players, Emma, Grover, yours truly, and Charlie.

On the agenda for next week is a ton. The caregiver is on vacation for her birthday so there are some extra days in there. Today and Tomorrow are errand and work days. Tuesday my sister and my Mom are taking me to the casino for my birthday. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are at Mom's. I'm not sure if I will miss days on the blog but there is a chance of that. I am really looking forward the week starting the 26th. One dinner engagement and one night at Mom's. Life gets easier.

What is on your agenda for next week? What was on your agenda for last week? Tell me all about your lives, inquiring minds want to know.

Dads

Quote from a TV dad, Ben Cartwright, "When a man knows something, he really knows deep down in his heart that he doesn't have tp prove it or argue it, just knowing is enough."

From today's OREGONIAN, statistics on fathers:

46 percent of fathers say they had at least one child outside of marriage.

46 percent of dads say that dads today play a bigger role than they did twenty to thirty years ago. 45 percent say they are less involved.

57 percent say that it is more difficult to be a dad today than it was twenty to thirty years ago.

27 percent with kids 18 or younger live away from at least on of their children which is double the percentage in 1960.

Married fathers who live with their children spend about six and a half hours a week on child care. This is up about 3 percent from 1960. Better but it is still half the time mothers put in.

13 percent of fathers with a college degree have children outside marriage compared with 56 percent of those that didn't finish high school.

Age makes a difference with 75 percent of fathers ages 20-24 having children out of wedlock, 36 percent for fathers between 35-44.

Here is an article about the top twelve dads throughout history:

Fugitive, Women, & 39

First up today is what our high school kids are up to:

That is just to stupid for words. My guess is some innocent person on the way home from work or shopping our an evening outing is killed when they run into a car without headlights. I hope there are steps taken to outlaw "Fugitive" before some gets hurt or dies from stupidity.

Women are better at some jobs then men. Men are better at some jobs then women. That is reality. But I think you might be surprised at what jobs women are better at:

Back From Boredom

I'm back. Done with the seminars and two nights at Mom's. I am home for a couple of hours then back to Mom's for a couple of days.

The first seminar was on Estate and Trusts tax returns. The second seminar was about Social Security and Medicare. The following is what we play for:

Some states don't bother with taking attendance so you get the credit whether you sign the attendance sheet sent out the last hour of the seminar or not. Sign in you are good to go. Oregon is a lot more anal than that. You sign in in the morning and sign the attendance sheet in the afternoon.

The dinner at Nancie's went well. She is an excellent cook and I really liked her friends. There was another couple there and I was glad for that. It kind of gave us more to talk about. Right before her friends got there Nancie told me that Chris was her ex husband. That was kind of weird but he was really nice. They were married very young and only married for a couple of years. They were just to young. He and his new wife, also named Chris, have been married thirty years. They were really interesting to talk to because they are retired and traveling the world. I also found out that Nancie is an excellent painter. She has held her paintings and held show at several art galleries.

Looking for a gift for Fathers' Day or other occasions? Here is a good idea for one:

Tuesday's president was U.S. Grant. Today's president was quoted as saying. "To some generations much is given. Of other generations much is expected. This generations of Americans has a rendezvous with destiny." He was born in 1882 and died in office in 1945. He said these awards as he accepted his party's nomination for a second time. These words were said as a reference to the economic depression going on at the time but would soon take on a new meaning. You really have enough information right now to know who this president is but if you need more form an attachment with the number 32. Which President Am I?

PRESIDENTS:

Yesterday's president was William McKinley. Today's president was quoted as saying "No terms except an unconditional and immediate surrender can be accepted." This president that was considered one of the worst presidents in history was born in 1822 and died in 1885. He said this during the Civil War. His nickname became "Unconditional Surrender." If you know the number eighteen then you can answer the question, Which President Am I?

Duct Tape Festival or Cow Chip Throw?

Sometimes I like to use personal life experiences to help others. How do you tell when you should call 911 when you are having chest pains?

http://www.everydayhealth.com/heart-health/chest-pain-emergency.aspx

Sounds like you call 911 whenever you have chest pains.

Now that you are healthy you need some suggestions of places to go. How about a cow chip throw or duct tape festival?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20110610/od_nm/us_picks_wacky

Where are you going? Anything on the list that interests you?

Why do doctors lie? Do you want to know the answer to that question?

PRESIDENTS

"The mission of the United States is one of benevolent assimilation." Born in 1843 and died in 1901 he said this in a proclamation regarding The Philippines. The whole thing started with the sinking of The Main. He is best known for winning intensely-fought elections by fighting for gold and high tariffs, for leading the nation to victory in 90 days in the Spanish American War, and for forging a Republican coalition that, with one interruption, dominated national politics until the 1930s. If you know the number 25 then you can answer the question, Which President Am I?

Back To Health Update

I'm am back to full health. Yesterday I finally got my energy back to one hundred per cent. I found out two things, I was sicker than I thought I was and the recovery process is longer as you get older. I'm really glad to be where I was before the hospital causing illness.

Last week. Sunday was Mom to lunch. Monday was an intended day of rest but mom got really ill. She didn't really remember where she was and couldn't remember the name of her second son. It really scared the heck out my sister and I. It turned out to be a bout with low blood sugar. She recovered and is fine. Tuesday was actually a day of rest. Wednesday was an accounting seminar in the morning and at Mom's in the afternoon and at night. Thursday was at Mom's all day. My friend Nancie came over in the afternoon to treat Mom's feet and mine. Friday was a day of rest but I started feeling good enough to do some exercises to get my strength back. Saturday I was feeling pretty well so I took my clothes to the dry cleaners, went to the pharmacy, grocery shopped, and went on a mission to see how to get to Nancie's house. In between there I also took Mom to lunch. In addition I bought some Fathers' Day and get well cards for various friends and relatives.

Next week is one of those from hell. There will definitely not be a blog entry on Wednesday and there may not be one on Thursday as well. Today I am going to the movie Super 8. Tomorrow Nancie invited me to dinner at her house to meet some friends of hers. I know how to get there now so I will be on time. Tuesday is an all day accounting seminar and then the night at Mom's. Wednesday is an all day accounting seminar and then the night at Mom's. Thursday is at Mom's all day. Friday and Saturday are recovery day. You all will be proud of me though, when I saw how full my schedule was and not wanting a relapse I called a client and delayed a work assignment. I've been with this client since 1980 so I knew he would be understanding and he was. That really does take the pressure off.

The blog is now yours. Fill me in on our lives. That really is the thing I enjoy most, hearing about what is going on with you.

Happy Saturday

Yesterday's president was John Quincy Adams. Trivia returns Monday.

We are only going to do happy things today. The first is a video from DanaRae that was sent to her by M.J.

I could watch this video over and over, it is just so down charming.

Grads, Foods, & Intrigue

Happy Friday. In the second in a series of articles, more about today's graduates.

http://www.oregonlive.com/education/index.ssf/2011/06/oregon_universities_see_more_n.html

I was really surprised at some of the statistics in the above article. Non-traditional graduates are almost forty percent.

A little advise now on how to get rid of food:

http://www.everydayhealth.com/digestive-health/how-long-is-my-food-safe-to-eat.aspx?xid=aol_eh-digest_9-_20110606&aolcat=ESO&icid=main%7Chp-laptop%7Cdl3%7Csec1_lnk1%7C215623

Do you use the small test? Or are you more careful than that?

Intrigue right on Facebook:

I am pretty stunned at some of the stuff in the article.

TODAY'S PRESIDENT:

"I am a man of reserved, cold, austere, and forbidding manners; my political adversaries say, a gloomy misanthropist, and my personal animals, an unsocial savage." Born in 1767 and died in 1848. I spoke these words when I was secretary of state. As the eldest son of a previous president I excelled at being a foreign diplomat. My wife and I hardly spoke when we were in the White House. Dad was before me but if you know the number six you can answer the question, Which President Am I?
