Your Day Is Here Again

Another week bites the dust and Update Day is here again. The day the blog becomes yours. Vent. Share joys. Just Say hi. Introduce yourself. Tell us about your elderly or your children or any other relative. Traumatic event that you need to share? I am all ears. Have questions? There are several of people here willing to help. Most of us have been caregivers for several years. Since 2001 in my case. Pat, DR, & Dona have cared for elderly just as long. This is a great place to seek out help or support.

My week’s only highlight was a going away party for a niece that has decided to spend her senior year of high school in Slovakia. It should be a wonderful experience for her. Have a great time and enjoy the experience Katie!

This morning I had a me morning. I went out for breakfast by myself and enjoyed a nice breakfast while I quietly read the Sunday paper. I haven’t went out for a Sunday breakfast by myself in a very long time. I usually take Mom along but today I felt I just needed to be alone and reflect. After breakfast there was some errands. A battery for Mom’s sugar tester (has to be Mom in there some where). A stop at Radio Shack to pick up a two line phone jack to replace the one I accidentally stepped on. Then to the Franz Bakery outlet store to pick up the breads for the educated men being idiots night this coming Tuesday.

Do you get comfortable in life with certain things and certain people? Your dry cleaner for instance? Or your barber or hairdresser? People you really don’t think about until you seek out their service. They have been helping you for years and you know they will clean your clothes or cut your hair just the way you want them to. Then one day you show up and they are gone. I went to get my haircut a couple of days ago and asked when Sandy would be in. I was told she was off until December. She has been cutting my hair for almost ten years. I give her twenty bucks, she cuts my hair exactly the way I want it. Now she is gone. I was shocked at my reaction. I felt kind of lost. I looked around the salon and all the stylists looked to damn young. So I left. I know it sounds discriminatory but I would rather have a woman over forty cut my hair. I just don’t look good with spiked and multi-colored hair. I am going to my regular salon tomorrow and roll the dice. I am determined to survive someone new cutting my hair, young or old. However, If the dice sends me in the direction of a young woman, wish me luck!

Do you have anyone that has been providing you a service for a long time that if you went to seek out that service miss him or her if they were gone? The Blog is now yours. Tell me everything. Special kudos for secrets.

Good job on the lovely breakfast. Good luck to Katie and have fun! Good luck to you with the haircut. I still haven't found anyone to give me the "look" I want.

Certain people I rely on? Browning, our pharmacist. I'd be lost without him, trust him implicitly to spot new prescriptions that might contain something I'm allergic to or, with Mom, stuff he thought would interact negatively.

Scattered week. My highlight was my birthday, which I took entirely for me. Manicure, my first-ever pedicure (I live a deperived life), lunch with a friend, line dance, dinner out with Himself, calls from all the sibs and Mom. Two minor crises resolved for Mom (as you say, Bill, Mom has to be in there). Haunting garage sales Saturday AM, something we enjoy and have rarely done in the last few years. Finally decided a worker was worthy of good tools and we went out and got a new vacuum, one that met my wants and needs (hopefully), rather than one on sale or cheapest available. Unless you have pets that shed and bring outdoor trash in every time they go outside, you cannot understand what a treat I hope this will be (g).

Secrets? Well, I did tell the SC. But I'm now admitting, even to Himselfs, that I’m tired of doing what I don’t want to do, what other people expect me to do and not doing what sounds like fun, ‘cause I’m "supposed" to be doing something else. And I'm taking steps to change that and change commitments. (Obviously, my adjustment period is creating an attitude).

Oh, I signed up to be part of a dissertation study. Not real sure how it works, since Dorinda's description had to be "vague" so as not to skew applicants, but it appears to be taking a look at how using virtual reality can affect/ improve/change a person's outlook. All I know is we'll be visiting current, historic and "fantastical" places, *maybe* enjoying a resort on a Spanish island, a night at a Paris club, a visit to Dublin and the like. It's ten weeks. It meant another afternoon away from home and work. Not acceptable, with the Ollie class starting. So, (remember above "secret") I emailed the gals who "lead" at Judy's pool during summer and said I needed them to agree to take one afternoon a week or I needed to cut the class to one day a week. They're going to take a day. Yea!

Hi Dr

I may end up with a new look, I just hope it doesn;t involve nipple or nose rings and spiked hair.

Pharmacist is extremely important, they can keep from getting the wrong prescription if the doc screws up, they have a history of your meds and can tell you what to do and what the effects will be. Good choice!

Nobody deserved a me birthday more than yuo did, I am glad you had it.

Congrats on the new vaccum, did you name it?

I am completely with you are being tired of you don't want to do. And good for you adjustment period that it did create an attitude! We are all with you!

Gosh that virtual reality dissertation sounds absolutely intriguing, I hope you will share it with us here!

And good for you class being supportive!

Gee, somehow I just don't see you in nose rings and spikes (g>. Haven't named the vacuum yet, but I suspect "Jaws" is a top contender, if it lives up to its reputation.

Thanks for the support on the new attitude -- it's coming as a shock to some (g). I'll definitely keep you posted on the dissertation study. As to class support -- they had a choice: someone take a day or class would only be one day a week. I guess that's what they call motivaton and incentive (g)

You'll be fine with the new hair-cutter. I know we'd be devastated if our Rose quit cutting hair. She's done mine for over 20 years, and John's for about 15. But we'd survive, I'm sure. And you'll look GREAT with green and blue striped hair.

We're heading out tomorrow for about a month - more planned than usual, but over a wide range. We've been in town WAY too long, and our feet have definitely been itching. I'll have the laptop and be online any chance I get. Y'all hold the fort!

Hi Dr

Nose rings and spikes might cause my mom to have a heart attack.

Jaws is a good name for a vaccum. It was a nickname that we had for an aunt who was a compulsive talker.

If anyone is entitled to a new attitude it is you!

Hello Mary Z

Green and blue hair would match my eyes.

Wow a month long trip, you are my idol! Have a fun and safe trip and check in when you can as you will be missed.

I want to see a photo of you, Bill, with spiked blue hair and a nose ring! Go for it!

I don't have many people I count on to be there, but I'd put John, my plumber, right up there along with Mickey, my pharmacist. Mickey, however, will be going away, as my lovely insurance has decreed that if we want any kind of decent price, we will use mail order Medco for maintenance meds. If we try to get them from a local pharmacy, we'll have to pay full price. I am infuriated by this, because it will probably drive Mickey's small pharmacy out of business. He already lost the people from the teachers' union to a similar deal with giant CVS, and now he'll lose all the Motion Picture people. "Everybody" is what he said to me. Aren't we supposed to be supportive of small business? I sometimes despair of this country, and especially the health insurance rat bastards.

On a happier note, DR, what kind of vacuum did you get? I'd like a new one, myself.

Nothing much to update, except that mom seems to have deteriorated a bit farther mentally. She no longer tells the staff when she needs the bathroom, so I fear she'll be back in diapers soon. I hate to see that.

Nice you having a me morning today...It certainly is needed every once in a while. Especially after one of those days.....

As to getting comfortable with certain things and certain people..YES to both. I got so comfortable with my life before coming here it seemed nearly impossible to find all I wanted or needed since I had to change everything being this was an hour away from where I always lived.
Pharmacist was the first thing. I tried to keep mine but it was just too hard when mom was so bad for me to go an hour each time I needed something, so after trying to find my own, I ended up with the one mom always had and loved...(me not so much loving, he seemed rather rude to me) but after 6 years, he does have my back and I count on him. I do like it when they know you well enough to call you by name when you go in..and there are a few things around town that are doing that now..(bank teller/pharmacist/butcher..etc....so even though I hate it around here its nice to have that.

As to stylists....I never had one and to be quite honest am very afraid to go try one. (last try was my worst nightmare) SO good luck to you, Bill!

I have however gotten very used to a certain type of clothes/shoes I wear and have in the past 2 years found that all I am used to are being discontinued...I mean clothes/shoes/underwear & antiperspirant! (sorry but you asked)It is becoming a real nightmare for me. I mean they must think I am dead so they can just discontinue things I have been buying for years? Geez! Yeah, Yeah, I know I need to get a life and try something different...but it is really hard when you get Comfortable with certain things.
So I sure feel for you Bill, hope things work out for you better than they are for me.

Oh yeah and I almost forgot...DR, I do understand the treat of a good vacuum cleaner so what kind did you get? I am looking for a new/good one too. So looking for a report on it soon!

Hi Pat

If I end up with spiked blue hair you will get a photo of me!

You are the second one that mentioned pharmacist, I didn't mention mine because she is my niece. That just sucks that you have order medco meds and are losing your pharmacist. My heart goes out to Mickey, it just isn't fair at all.

I am sorry your mom has deteriporated a bit that is just the pits to watch.

Hi Dona

I imagine the move there you had to change doctors too. Pharmacist was probably hard enough let alone schools and doctors. You really have given up a lot for your parents.

You do your own hair?

I did ask and am thrilled that you told me. I've also got used to a comfortable underwear, double extra large even though I am a medium, I just like the lose fitting style.

I hope someone steps in and takes over the brand names that you are familiar with!

I agree with the pharmacist. I went to the same guy since we moved here, 20 years ago. When I lived in Japan and was having terrible morning sickness, my mother went to my pharmacist and he made up what I needed and mailed it to me. I worshipped that man. Two years ago, the same thing happened to him that is happening with Pat. He lost a big company's clients, and Medicare reduced their payments, and it wasn't worth it to him anymore. He sold his store and went to work part time for a local grocery store pharmacy, but I never see him anymore.

We moved to a closer grocery pharmacy, but I hate them. Every time you walk in, they look at you like you're infringing on their free time, and say it will "probably" be at least 20 minutes. Last time I went in I was in serious pain, and there was nobody there waiting, and still they kept me standing there while they chatted. I'm lucky enough not to be on any regular prescriptions, so I haven't been back. I will be going somewhere else next time I need something.

I would also be devastated to lose my doctor. She's been with me and my husband and kids since I got pregnant in 1989. She knows me and gives me credit for being intelligent. I don't know what I'll do when she decides to retire.

Good luck with the haircut! Heh.

Hi Mary

Pharmacist seems to be everyone's choice.

That is just awful what is happy to the small pharmacists and then congress Democrats are caving in on health care reform.

I go to a grocery store pharmacy but since it is either my niece or the woman that introduced my niece to her husband, I get good service.

It honestly wouldn't devastate me to bad to lose my doctor since I don't feel that close to him.

Mary Z, have a great trip. Do you go by car or in an RV?

Pat, I can appreciate your anger over the pharmacy issue. Somehow, I don't see a mail order firm watching my back like Browning does. What a shame it may put Mickey out of business. And I'm sorry to hear about your mom. Will keep you both in my prayers.

For those asking about the vacuum, stand by for a "real" review until I use it for a couple weeks. We went out to buy one highly recommended by Consumer Reports and ended up with another, which CR hasn't yet rated. I did find ratings on two other sites and people either love it or hate it, there seems to be no inbetween. It's a Bissel multi-cyclonic lift-off, model 18Z6. Great suction, from what I've seen on a small test, both on the floor and using the hose. Special attachment for stairs and furniture and pet hair. Seven brush height settings, important since we have everything from plush to commercial carpet, hardwood floors and throw and area rugs. Two things that attracted us... there's a button on the top that allows you to turn the brush action on and off, so if you're doing bare floors or if the brush tangles with something, a quick push of the button at the top stops the brush. One problem with the previous one was tangling in a short loose thread and immediately burning out the belt. The second attraction is that the canister with the dust bin, motor filter and Hepa filter (oh, it has three filter systems) lifts out of the frame, so you have a small canister vac to get to awkward places or use to clean out the car or whatever. It's heavy (21 pounds), but pushes easily and the canister alone is much lighter. Reading the reviews, I got the impression the people who weren't happy with it were not checking and cleaning the motor and secondary filters regularly and thus not getting as much suction as at first. Looks like the filters are easy to get at and easy to clean (brush off, rinse under cool water), so that's just routine maintenance once a month. And it has a separate HEPA filter, which I wanted. And the price was right - $180 at Target. More than any of you wanted to know, I'm sure

Hi DR

Sorry it took so long to respond but I was at Mom's last night and it is sometimes difficult to get on the Internet there.

That vaccum sounds like it will do everything for you maybe even cook a few meals and then do the dishes!
