I'm Troubled Day

First, I really enjoyed the responses to yesterday's blog entry. I learned a little more about the ones that posted their responses. Second, the following is a link to what I would call a more interesting story than I would a good one:

http://www.usatoday.com/life/lifestyle/pets/2009-12-02-sphynx02_ST_N.htm

Did you survive Black Friday? How about Cyber Monday? Are you as troubled as I am by the latest phenomenon of having to put a name on every freaking day of the week? Where are we headed for anyhow?

Don't forget to get gas Tuesday, followed by join AAA Wednesday. Then don't let little things bother you Thursday followed by take your meds Saturday (we have to wait an extra day to take our meds because Friday is already named). Sunday is no doubt Saturated Sunday. That is the day we get nailed and overloaded with nothing but Christmas Specials, Christmas Movies, and Christmas Stories on television. If we head out to the malls to avoid all the hoopla we get to hear about somebody's silver balls. Or is that silver bells?

I really would prefer that the networks run the regular shows instead of overload us with the same thing year after year. I mean I am glad that someone has A Wonderful Life but do we have to hear about a hundred times a year for a hundred years? And just how many times can that annoying little Ralphie get his tongue frozen to a telephone pole anyhow? Shouldn't he have learned the first time? And just what parent in their right mind would buy a six year-old a gun for Christmas anyhow? And what about that singing Nun that escapes the Nazi's so she can marry a Plummer? Isn't it about time that she and her nine hundred future step children go peacefully in the night?

Give me my Flash Forward, Friday Night Lights, Top Chef and the regular programs that I watch. Then give me a new holiday movie for goodness sake.

I thought about naming tomorrow I'm Tired Of This Chit Thursday and then you all could tell me what your are tired of. However, go ahead and tell me what you are tired of today. It doesn't have to be holiday related. It can be that thoughtless person that shuts the door in your face as you are trying to push a wheelchair with your mom in it through it. It can be anything. This is the day to vent.

I will be announcing The Dahn Report First Annual Christmas Contest on Friday. When it will start. How much time you will have to answer. What it entails. What the prizes will be. Here are three practice questions.

Who was the first African-American woman to receive a patent?

A. Sarah E. Goode.
B. Mary Davenport-Engberg
C. Maxine Dunlep
B. Becky Sharp.

What is Edith Houghton famous for?

Who was canonized as the first American saint?

I'm tired of so many things that I won't burden you with listing them. Today's special was standing in a rather long line in Macy's with a small lingerie purchase and the woman behind me crowding into my space as she talked (loudly) on her !@#$% cell phone. To top it off, one of the two cashiers left, and somebody was doing a lot of returns, so things proceeded at the proverbial snail's pace. I finally stalked off, muttering, and found someone in the jewelry dept who took me right away.

I'm not sure why people's cell phones in public places are so annoying. If they were talking to each other, I wouldn't be annoyed. But then they probably wouldn't be SHOUTING.

I'll join you on the Christmas TV specials. They're great when you have little kids. After that, not so much. But with no good TV, you can catch up on DVD movies. She says, trying to look on the bright side.

Hi Pat

I don't know where I read it but the author was talking about how annoying it was for people to talk so loud on their cell phone in public. One dude that was talking loud on his phone gave out his cell phone to the person he was talking to. The author wrote it down and called him two or thre days later and left him a message "if you don't want people you don't know to have personal information about you, mabye you should tone it down when you are talking on your cell phone in public." Then she hung up.

I kind of liked that.

I found the article on the cat therapy interesting. I do think animals can be very soothing for both the ill and the elderly, but usually one hears only about dogs.

I survived Black Thursday and Cyber Monday quite well, since I don't join the shopping frenzy, but I agree -- why do we have to have special names for certain days? It all gets quite convoluted on occasion. Didn't Black Friday refer to the stock market crash during the Depression, at one time?

Things I'm tired of? Long list and probably like many others. Cell phones in public. One thing if you're calling to check a grocery item or if you're waiting for a call from a doctor or something of that nature and can't be home to take it, but it seems half the people in the world run around with a Bluetooth device in their ear, talking constantly and I've more than once answered a question I thought was directed at me (wry s). TV stuff doesn't get to me, because I don't watch TV. Spam and email invitations to let Viagra enhance my life get to me.

Like you, it was fascinating to read some of the things folks have done that were pretty unexpected. What an adventurous group we have here. One thing I forgot to include -- I was knockdown judge for Golden Gloves amateur boxing and was invited to serve at Nationals twice. Also invited to go to Russian, but that int'l meet was cancelled, due to the Cold War.

Hi DR

I agree that you think of therapy dogs but not therapy cats so I also found the article interesting.

Black Friday was the stock market crash that lead to the depression, Black Monday was the stock market decline just a few years ago. It all runs together.

I just shake my head every time I go to the grocery store, everyone there can't even shop without a phone. I also had the spam emails.

We have some amazing backgrounds that post here. Wow Golden Gloves knockdown judge. That is amazing. To bad the international meet was canceled, that would have a fascinating trip to Russia!

I too survived Black Friday and Cyber Monday as I don't join either. I did a few years ago go shopping on Black Friday with SIL, but I didn't really understand what the big deal was. (I was just glad to get out of the house for a day):)

I also wonder why all the names are put on days....I can only remember one day having a name and that was Wednesday. In the early 70's, a co-worker was referring to Wednesday as Hump Day. And since we were working in a kiddie environment, & I had no clue as I had never heard that expression before, I cautiously asked "Hump day?" :)

So I wonder who comes up with all the names for the days?

And I am with you on the same movies year after year, I mean there are quite a few out there that are good movies that you never see around the holidays.

And I have to say I happen to like Its a Wonderful Life.....

As to what bothers me the most? It is for sure the cell phone talkers. Especially ones who have the piece in their ear and are talking so loudly and you don't see them holding the phone to their ear so you stupidly think they are talking to you. Err...not me, just DR. :)

But today it was people who you hold the door open for and then they don't even say thank you and then the door catches your jacket and pulls a hole in it the size of an apple.....:(

Hi Dona

Boy did you ever hit on one of my major pet peeves! I hate not when they don't say thank you when you hold the door from but also when they don't wave a thank you wave at you when you let them in in traffic! Then I just want to rear end them.

I love your reaction to Hump Day, I didn't know what they meant either! Reminds me of the time I ate pistaccio nuts and I said to the person that gave me to them "Darn the nuts are hard." She said "you idiot, you have to take the shell off." Who would have known.

I like both The Sound of Music and A Wonderful Life I just think one show a year is enough.
