The Party

Today a report on the party, then tomorrow maybe the confessions of a recovering football nerd. As you know last night was the football season kickoff party. It was fun and the food spread that I put together was so well received it was gone by the end of the night. Pictures of the food follow the trivia.

To show you what kind of brain power is wasted on football and to also show the diversity of the group, in attendance were:

S - Only woman in the group. Political consultant, once ran a campaign for a candidate for mayor of Portland.

T - S’s husband. Honorary Legal Counsel for The Netherlands. Well-known Attorney.

D - Vice President of Purchasing for a large group of hospitals. Two children. Daughter in second year of college on a musical scholarship. One son a junior in high school who gave up sports because he wants to end high school with a 3.9 GPA.

B - Retired and part-time court reporter. Used to own a private college. Married to a woman twenty years his junior.

G - Retired paralegal. Single

J - Manages several apartments. Single.

A - Night manager of local C & W Tavern. Married less than a year.

J - Part-owner of tinting business. Married a little over three years, two children born during that time.

T - Attorney, works for above T. Has big Yahoo privacy case going on now.

D - Owner of two business including the business where last night’s party was held. Adopted two children.

G - Attorney. Semi-retired. First attorney in Oregon to sue a rapist in *civil* court and win a judgment for the victim.

Last but not least yours truly. Author of two football books. Nutcase. Semi-retired CPA.

In the group are young, old, Democrats, Republicans, men, women, professionals, retired, important people, nobodys like me, and working stiffs. It was kind of fun watching the dynamics of the group and who people gravitated towards. The two D’s, the owner of the business where the party was held and the V.P. of purchasing, gravitated towards me. And they were definitely the most help. They helped me unload the car and then helped with the set up. When the party was over the D’s helped with the cleanup and loaded my car. I didn’t believe in reincarnation until last night when the party was over and everyone but the two D’s recorded speed records getting out the door to avoid helping with the cleanup.

We did have a lot of laughs. The group seemed to not only dish out ribbing but take it well. The one woman probably was the quietist. Most years she is the most vocal. But I think last night she was kind of ticked at her hubby because he had a couple of beers. Who really knows.

Good food, some laughs, some nice comrade, some people watching, some interaction, and some marital drama. Sounds like a good party to me.

I am curious, however, if you were at a party, and it seemed like the only woman in attendance was being unusually quiet due to something her hubby did what would you do to bring her into the conversation? Inquiring minds want to know.

I'm glad your party was a success, Bill. And let's hear it for the two Ds who helped you clean up afterward.

Being another woman, and assuming it was common knowledge she was quiet because of her husband, I might try to commiserate with her on the failings of men. [g] Otherwise, I suppose I'd try to draw her into a conversation, but if she just wanted to be quiet, I'd leave her along.

Hi Pat

I tried talking to her but then she got really snide with me so I kind of went back to the D's.

Nobody else tried. Not even her husband.

Congrats on what was obviously a successful party. The food trays look yummy! And, yes, hurray for the help with clean-up. Amazing how people tend to disappear when it's time for that.

As to the woman... I think I'd try to engage her in conversation, being another woman. You did try, but at that point she may well have branded all men with the same iron, if she was truly upset, and just wanted to be left alone. I wouldn't have wanted to be in the car on the way home (wry s).

Hi DR

Thanks for the compliments about the tray!

I think some men in the group kind of resent her being in it. That may be why nobody else tried.

I wouldn't have wanted to be in the car with them either!
