The Death Of Common Sense

NEWS FLASH: Funeral home raises prices due to the cost of living.

I sometimes think common sense is dead and we really needn to resurrect it from the grave to turn this angry world into a more kind one.

Speaking of common sense, couldn't the city, county, and state shown more common sense in the following article and found a way to let this lady keep having garage sales?

Couldn't the casino in the following article used more common sense and found a better solution that one that generated so much bad publicity for them. Read the comments.

There is so much common sense lacking in the following article I don't really know where to start.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/18/standard-poors-investigation-mortgage-ratings_n_930237.html?icid=maing-grid10%7Chtmlws-sb-nb%7Cdl1%7Csec1_lnk2%7C87452

Didn't anyone have the common sense to say "don't release the fact that we are investigating S & P now because it will look like a witch hunt."? Nobody is going to read far enough in the story or hear the words "the investigation was started six months to a year before S & P downgraded the U.S." They are going to assume it is a payback and quit reading. Where was the common sense when S & P started charging people that they were rating? Certainly someone at S & P would know that it might not look on the up and up.

Comment Away.

QUOTES

Harriet Tubman authored yesterday's quote. "When you get into a tight place, and everything goes against you till it seems as if you couldn't hold on a minute longer, never give up then, for that 's just the place and time that the tide'll turn." - Was authored by a writer and abolitionist born in 1811 and died in 1896. She wrote more than 20 books, including novels, three travel memoirs, and collections of articles and letters. She was influential both for her writings and her public stands on social issues of the day. She was among the founders of the Hartford Art School which later became part of the University of Hartford. Have you ever had an uncle Tom? If so did you ever visit UNCLE TOM'S CABIN. If so you can tell me who authored today's quote.

I find it disgusting that the city won't allow Ms Cline to have as many yard sales as she wishes. She's holding them in her back yard, which should eliminate the neighbors' problems, except for maybe a little more traffic on their street once a week. Sometimes it's true that rules are made to be broken.

The comments I read about the casino seem to be unanimous. I agree with them. Pay the man.

Interesting that the investigation of S&P began BEFORE they downgraded the US credit rating. It had certainly occurred to me that it might be payback, but apparently not so, which is a relief. I agree with you, Bill, that S&P didn't use much common sense in their ratings dealings. But they sure made a lot of money.

What a group of fiascos, Bill.

My heart goes out to Ms Cline. Bad enough she has cancer, bad enough she couldn't continue her regular work to pay the bills, bad enough she's parting with items she doesn't want to see gone. I sincerely hope the story reaches out and helps her locate other avenues of help. I have to say, I found the letter from Obama to be an appalling response to the woman's missive to him.

Uh, I don't think you can use a computer glitch to deny a man what seem to be legitimate winnings.

As to the S&P thing -- ya know, given the investigation started some time ago and appears to tie S&P to the mortgage/bank collapse, one begins to wonder if the sour grapes aren't on the other side... S&P striking out while the investigation - which doesn't make them look to good, at this point - was in progress and before reports were released. Call me a cynic.

Hi Pat

Common sense would have the city give an exemption of the law to to Jan Cline. According to the news this morning she is meeting with the city mayor today. The part of the letter that disturbs is the neighbor reported her. Not a good neighbor in my book.

I agree with you, the casino should pay the man. Several made the point that we could claim malfunction after playing a slot machine and demand our money back.

Yup the investigation started before the downgrade. But when I first heard the story my reaction was payback how stupid to do it now. By the way if you want to get your gander up read the following two stories. Stories you will never see on Fox.

Hi DR

I was surprised that Obama had the time to write the letter. If in fact he did write the letter. My guess is that he never even read it, a member of the staff did. This is a different Mrs. Cline, it is one from Michigan. The one from Oregon, the main focus of the article and the garage sale fiasco is Jan Cline, the one in Michigan is Jennifer Cline. Confusing because they didn't even take a breath before going from one to the other.

I'd pay the man in the casino.

Interesting point on the S & P investigation. S & P had to know an investigation was going on at the time of downgrade. I am a cynic right along with you. And I think rating someone that pays you looks bad. We have a standard in accounting that says "If it appears to be an impropriety, then it is an impropriety and you are to refuse the assignment."

Interesting two articles, Bill. So S&P is owned by a staunch Republican contributor, how unsurprising. What will they stoop to next?

As to Romney, he waves about with whatever breeze is blowing. I suspect he may have some good ideas, but to please his party, he won't admit to them and backs off from ones he's already had and implemented. What a hypocrite!

Hi Pat

What surprises me is that the Demos aren't point this out. Not only a contributor but worked for several Republicans. And Mitt retracted his criticism of Obama on the credit downgrade once it came out that the owner of S & P worked for him.
