You're Fired, The New Homeless, & Smile

The answer to yesterday's quote was Susan Anthony.

Starting out Saturday with a unbelievable story.

http://jobs.aol.com/articles/2011/08/09/bus-driver-george-daw-fired-for-saving-3-police-officers/?icid=maing-grid10%7Chtmlws-sb-nb%7Cdl3%7Csec1_lnk2%7C85152

I think firing this driver had to one of the stupidest things a company could do.

On to the new homeless:

The sad thing is the way politics are now I don't see the economy getting better anytime soon. More masters degrees are headed for the streets in my opinion.

Now let's close the day with a smile:

I'm glad at least they reinstated that driver. Shoot, what was he supposed to do? Just leave three cops on the road in a hailstorm watching their sinking car?

They keep talking about how crucial it is to have a college degree these days. And certainly some people put a huge premium on a degree, even if it isn't at all pertinent to the job on offer. This homeless man's degrees certainly seem to be in fields where there should be jobs, but even he can't seem to find one. Being 55 is a drawback, of course. I think you're right, Bill. There will be more and more people with impressive degrees headed for the streets. Along with those with no education and no skills.

Yes, I did smile at the last story. Very nice.

Hi Pat

I am glad they reinstated the bus driver too but it is just so insane that it got that far. Certainly there had to be better common sense among the management team at the bus company.

This guy with the degrees is very employable and yet he is homeless. Oil companies have their highest profits ever. The rich have their lowest taxes ever. Something is wrong with this picture.

I would have loved to be in the stands when the man took his mask off!

Firing the bus driver for "rescuing" three police officers is stupid and appalling. First of all, he had a small van, he had one teenager and an adult female employee, as opposed to a large bus full of small children. Second there are COPS, not hitchhikers. I'm glad we was reinstated, but I think it's a black mark against the bus company.

The interview with the man holding three degrees is distressing and scary, but I'm afraid we'll see more and more of it. Actually, it's been going on for some time. First, his age - people don't want to pay for the experience he brings with him and they don't want to mess up the insurance acturarial (sp?) tables that govern their premiums. Second, he's right - they look at his degrees and don't want to pay for the education he brings to the table. We fought this battle when Himself was downsized the age of sixty. Age was, we're sure, a factor. But the fact he was PhD, with impressive experience as a manager, university dept head, director of a state department all worked against him, as opposed to in his favor. And, yes, the offers he did get were often from colleges or universities as an adjunct professor, which were limited hours, no benefits, low pay. We've put more and more emphasis on college degrees for job qualification - a degree in basket weaving will suffice. Unfortunately, this leaves with a host of college graduates, with huge student loans, and no job opportunities. At the same time, we have companies sometimes crying for people with vocational/technical skills, many of which pay a decent salary and come with benefits.

Loved the last story and must admit I got a bit teary eyed, watching the wife's reaction.

Hi DR

The wife's reaction also made me tear up a bit. Think of how many people had to be quiet and how many people it took to pull it off. Amazing.

If I am charge of a bus company and one of my drivers rescues policemen I am not firing the driver, I am featuring him in a marketing campaign. Stupid, Stupid, Stupid.

The man with the degrees is, I am afraid, a combination of the sign of the times and the long practice of age discrimination. Lots of people now are working as contractors so the companies can avoid paying them benefits.
