The Justice System

The party was fun last night. I got home about ten and did some work. I was to pumped up to go to be right away. I'm looking forward to football season. Mostly because of the Sunday breakfasts. First one a week from Sunday.

Today is all about our justice system:

They should have thrown away the key on this dude a long time ago.

Next up a seven cent robbery:

I'm not so sure anyone should go to jail for seven cents, a diversion course would probably been better. However, this young man had a history and doesn't appear to have learned right or wrong. Maybe some jail time is the right thing to do.

Next up is the most controversial subject anyone can put on the blog:

http://news.yahoo.com/idaho-woman-challenges-abortion-laws-prosecution-130244951.html

I am a firm believer in women not going to jail for making medical decisions for themselves or decisions about their own body. I hope the woman succeeds in her legal endeavor.

Comment Away.

QUOTE

Lillian Wald authored yesterday's quote. "I was just born to swing, that's all." Was authored by a band leader born in 1898 and died in 1971. She was a jazz pianist, composer, arranger, singer, and bandleader, and the second wife of a famous trumpet player. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, she worked mostly as a soloist singing and playing piano. In the late 1940s, she decided to leave the music and become a tailor, so she took a course in tailoring. Her graduation project was to make a tuxedo for the famous trumpet player. She was born as in Memphis, Tennessee, where she grew up in a household with her grandmother, Priscilla Martin, a former slave from near Oxford, Mississippi. During her early years, She was taught hymns, spirituals, and Classics on the piano. She was drawn to popular music and later blues, but could only listen or play these styles occasionally and covertly, because her mother, Dempsey (she called her "Decie"), a deeply religious woman, considered them "sinful". Her compositions include "Struttin' With Some Barbecue", "Don't Jive Me", "Two Deuces", "Knee Drops", "Doin' the Suzie-Q", ""Just For a Thrill" (which became a major hit when revived by Ray Charles in 1959), "Clip Joint", and "Bad Boy" (a hit by Ringo Starr in 1978). Who authored today's quote?

Good grief! Arrested 99 times? Convicted in 23 of them? Not a very good rate of return there. And yes, they should have thrown away the key. Before he could have had a daughter to exploit.

I agree with the judge. I wouldn't care about the 7 cents, but I do care about assault, especially with guns, even if they were fake. What if that poor man had had a heart attack?

Oh, abortion again? Why oh why can't they stay out of our control of our own bodies? This was an intriguing statement, though: "The case comes as recent public opinion polls show, for the first time, a majority of Americans generally opposing abortion," said Scot Powe, constitutional law scholar at the University of Texas School of Law. "It's a thin majority but it compares to a time 10 or 15 years ago when most Americans would have supported the right to choose," he said.

That's the first I've heard of that. I had thought we had become more, not less reasonable. But on second thought, looking around at our politics and the tea party and all, why on earth should I have thought that?

I agree with you and Pat - they need to put this guy away and throw away the key. Actually, they needed to do that after about the 10th arrest and 1st or 2nd conviction. I cannot believe this guy is still walking the streets.

Seven cents may not sound like much, but if that's all the guy had in his pockets... I'm glad they're throwing the book at the kid. Either he'll learn his lesson or learn how to better execute crimes. Sigh.

Abortion -- rears its ugly head again. I don't know that it's a choice I would have made, but the flip side of the coin is that women should have that choice. Not only is it their body, but in too many cases, the entire responsibility of raising the child and supporting it may fall on the woman's shoulders, which means the child may not have the best chances or opportunities in the world. I think it's the woman's decision.

Okay, I'm out of here for a few days. We leave in the morning for the hamfest in NC and will be back either Saturday or Sunday and I am not taking the computer with me.

Hope you all have a good holiday weekend and I'll be back when I'm back.

Hi Pat

I alwaws thought there was this thing called a habitual criminal which you earned the right to be called after your third conviction. Then you spent a lot of time in jail. The court missed the boat on this guy. He should never see the light of day again.

The seven cent thing I am with the judge on this one. It isn't the seven cents, it is the assault and the learned behavior.

The woman should have never been arrested. I am pro choice not pro abortion. Because of the health risks it might not be the best choice. But this is a free country and woman's body woman's choice. Most of the surveys I have seen are just the opposite of Powe's. Texas is an extreme conservative state so I think the poll is sltanted.

Hi DR

They should have locked this guy up ten years ago.

It looks like we all agree on the seven cents.

And it looks like we all agree. If if we end up with abortion being against the law we should never send a woman to jail for having one.

Have a great time and a great weekend!!
